Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Warning - Incoming Scam Call Claiming to be from Virgin Media

This morning I was surprised to received a call from someone with an Indian accent, evidently speaking from an environment that sounded like a call centre.

He referred to a call I had apparently made last week about my internet connection. Although I couldn't remember making such a call and said so, I followed along for a while. He started by asking about the status of the light on the router. Next he began asking me to locate a little hole in the back of the router. From previous experience I realised that he was starting a reset process. With nothing about the call feeling genuine, at this point I told him I had no time at the present and would call back next week. He asked, "Well how much time do you have, Sir" That was it and I hung up.

I then rang Virgin. They confirmed that no call had been place to me, and that they would be unlikely to place such a call. I asked if he thought the call was part of a scam and he told me that the had no doubt that it was. He said that the call would probably have proceeded with a move to the computer and I would have been asked to download some software etc etc.

My 1471 function tells me that the person called from / or set their equipment to show that they called from 092 1985 0533. Uncle Google tells me that 092 is the code for Pakistan and offered no UK-based alternative.

I don't think this was a particularly well executed scam, but who knows maybe I got the new guy. So I'm posting in case others get a similar call and are caught in an unguarded moment.

I had something a little similar during the week when a guy (similar sounding set up) said he was ringing about my BT Broadband as they had detected (something ludicrous) along the lines of foreign agents trying to intercept and do damage to my account. I played along with it for a while but when I eventually said how impressed I was at these agents' level of sophistication and how skilled they must at hacking when I don't even use BT for my broadband, he hung up.
