Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

..... then set it up as a charity. You only have to pay 20% of the business rates charge on the premises.

New rules from govt mean a landlord now has to pay business rates on an empty premises. Many are re-let to charities because of the 20% rule. Orpington High St for example has 12 charity shops.

But I'm sure some entrepreneurial locals could come up with something different to the usual clothes/toys/books/kitchenware model that the main charities follow. EG. - a charity café providing an outlet for local bands/artists for example that gives (money as well) back to chosen music/art groups for youth etc in our borough.

Too complicated? Probably - but just a thought.

Oh why not a charity bookshop? As if a proper bookshop business doesn't already have enough competition from what is effectively a charity with regards to the amount of tax it pays, Amazon.

Yes but the OECD has just released a report to try and deal with that. We'll see if there's any take-up with that at the next G20 mtg. Pigs might fly (around Battersea power station).

In the US some states demand that tax is paid to them for sales made within its borders - which is why of course some businesses base themselves in states that don't have that stipulation and I think somehow those same companies have a way of channelling said sales via those states to avoid the state sales tax. Confusing it can be.
