Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

According to a local rag, Waitrose is set to take over the old Woolies store in Crouch End. Will people from 'our end' use it? Many people say that there are too many 'chain' food stores around, and that its opening will be a further nail for independent shops. Personally, whilst I welcome competition, I will continue to buy my fruit 'n' veg (to name just two) in Green Lanes! Discuss.

There was a great program on the telly the other day about indies and how they struggle against the might of the large multi-stores such as Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s cloning all our local convenience and community shopping areas.

It had the guy from the Crouch End Budgens on who seemed like a nice enough bloke. This will obviously be worrying him.

I rarely use these big brand neighbourhood stores as they are killing local businesses who simply cannot compete with the wholesale might of the larger companies.
Bought some food in Waitrose recently as we were at Brent X anyway. Thought the food quality was pretty appalling really.
Might have a gander. I liked their walnut and orange biscuits.

I don't know how Crouch End sustains it though, M&S, Budgens, Tescos and now Waitrose all within a stone's throw.

The people I used to do yoga with up there hardly looked like they ate a pick!
Buying veggies and fruit in Green Lanes which has been refrigerated & trucked in from easten europe?
UUgghh! Horrible stuff - tell tale sign - it goes rotten quickly!!
We once put a GM tomato on the shelf next to a non-GM tomato. The GM tomato proudly stood on the shelf red and firm while the other decayed slowly.

Green Lanes is so close you can buy fruit and veg that you are going to eat that day, makes sense if you live in a flat and don't have much storage space.
Exactly, fruit & Veg wasn't designed to 'last for ever' or look nice in a bowl for ever and ever..
thats because unlike the stuff you get in supermarkets like Waitrose it has not been nuked with gamma rays. Its NATURAL for food to go rotten quickly - its UNNATURAL for fresh food to last for weeks..
I LIKE Waitrose, and I will most definitely shop there! Can't be harder to get in and out of Crouch End than it is at our local Shitbury's!
Nowhere to park in Crouch End though.
Yes and no.

Yes, there's a big car park in the centre of Crouch End (behind Hornsey Town Hall & Library)

Owned by Haringey Council and little used by them.

Will they let you use it?

No.

.
You think..... good luck. Hopefully the W1 bus will be in operation in a year or two to take you down to Waitrose in Holloway Rd.

Poor Budgens, all that effort...
I am happy for Waitrose to open in crouch end as I am a regular shopper and I like the quality and diversity they provide. At present I have to go all the way to Russell Square as there isn't a branch in Harringey and this is not fair as there are loads of other supermarkets. Maryanne
