Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi folks,

I ran across this piece in the Guardian today and, since it name checks the area, I thought I'd pass it on for everyone to peruse.

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/emma-brockes-blog/2013/sep...

Here's the salient passage which opens the piece:

"I just got back to the US after two weeks in London, where the property bubble is so hysterical, so much worse than New York's, that people talk about neighbourhoods falling like bits of France in the war. Clapton's gone; King's Cross has gone – even that nasty bit of the Caledonian Road where people used to totter about at 9am sipping White Lightning.

"Tottenham (rebranded "South Tottenham"), which just got a Waitrose supermarket, might be reaching a tipping-point. Or it might take another 10 years – who knows in this climate, where anything over one bedroom and under £500,000 is presented as an eye-popping bargain?"

I, for one, look forward to a Waitrose opening close by, so long, that is, as they stock White Lightning, a delicious and refreshing beverage whatever time of day. Oh, and if you bother to read the rest of the article know that I've lived in Leyton and dear N15 is a far better part of the world. I mean, Leyton doesn't even have a Waitrose.

That would be hilarious and I wouldn't say no. But perhaps the reporter is thinking of the new Sainsburys...

Daft. South Tottenham is the N15 part but nobody calls it that. It's just Tottenham. Shoddy.

Yes, that's what I thought. *Raises a squeezy bottle of White Lightning in salute*

Cheers,d.

I live in N15, have done since 1985 so know it well.

South Tottenham is the bit round Hermitage Road. It said so on my old land registry documents, which was a bit of a shock because I thought I'd bought in East Hampstead. Still no Waitrose though.
According to HM Govt, Vale Rd N4 is South Tottenham. However much I tried they would insist

South Tottenham is N15 in the postcode alphabet

N13 Palmers Green

N14 Southgate

N15 SoTo

N16 Stokey

N17 Tottenham

N18 Upper Edmonton etc

so by that code, all of N15 is SoTo - except those of us who live round SoTo station know it's the mile around Seven Sisters, not as far as that lot up the 7Sis Road.

Sorry postcodes, like constituencies, are an administrative tool; neighbourhoods are lived in and defined by people, not administrators or estate agents.

or insurance companies!

....or councils......

Can't be 7Sis, because Southgate is N14.  E before O.

N14 - Southgate

N15 - Stamford Hill/ South Tottenham

N16- Stamford Hill/ Stoke Newington
