Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

If you are one of the dozen HOLliers who expressed enthusiasm for a Wightman Bus over the past twenty weeks, would you like to move from talking the talk to walking the walk mode? See the Blog post on the right of the Main Page before it disappears.

Always the way, OAE.

Opinions are cheap, actual support is harder to come by.
Still living in hope, John!
I met my neighbours, Mr & Mrs Fox, this morning on Wightman Road, making their way slowly from Wood Green via Green Lanes and Umfreville. As usual they asked how the Wightman Bus was coming along. They've been waiting for it for 52 years. I was able to tell them we've had 3 more online signatures in the first week of September. They went off homewards dancing a merry jig despite their aches & pains and heavy shopping bags.
HoL members interested in a Wightman Road bus route may wish to note that a question by Caroline Pidgeon MLA (Lib Dem) to the Mayor which was referred to TFL, has now had a reply of sorts.

I shall ask for a follow-up answer which actually addresses the point of the question, which is that there are people who live on Wightman Road who are not able to manage the hike from Green Lanes.

Anyway, here is the latest.

Mayor answers to London
Bus route proposal for Wightman Road, Haringey
[Main question]

Question number 2404/2009
Meeting date 09/09/2009

Question by Caroline Pidgeon
Can you ask TfL to re-examine the case for the provision of a bus route (or the diversion of an existing route) along B138 Wightman Road in Haringey as many people who are not physically fit find it very demanding to get home after using services along Green Lanes – several stretches of Wightman Road can only be reached from Green Lanes along roads that involve a very steep climb?

Answer by Boris Johnson
I have asked TfL to look into this matter and respond directly to you.

Subject: Update to Mayor's Question 2404/2009

Dear Caroline

I am writing further to your question 2404/2009 to the Mayor, a link to which is copied below for ease of reference:

http://www.london.gov.uk/mqt/public/question.do?id=27466

The majority of this area is within reasonable walking distance of high frequency services providing extensive journey opportunities.

· the 29 which serves the other side of the “Harringay Ladder” which links Wood Green, Finsbury Park and Holloway,

· the W3 which links Stroud Green and New River Village to Wood Green and Finsbury Park, where other high frequency services facilitate interchange for those wishing to travel to Holloway,

· the 91 which links Hornsey Road to Holloway and Crouch End where other high frequency services facilitate interchange for those wishing to travel to Wood Green.

A new or diverted route would not increase passenger benefits sufficiently to justify the cost of introduction.

I hope this is useful but if you have any questions please let me know,

Regards

Andrew

Many thanks, David, for your renewed offer. If you could add in your follow-up that of 256 residents who have signed our petition to date the vast majority are from Wightman/Alroy/Denmark roads - in other words, residents of the main proposed route for whom the existing routes (29, W3, 91) are not at all practical.

(Meanwhile, FOCUS related blogs purporting to emanate from this quarter of Wightman Road should be swallowed with a shake of salt, through clenched teeth if necessary!)

Eddie
Eddie , how's this bus for a solution?

You could also sell milk from it, if you wanted.. :o)
