Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

They are creeping up : State Agents signs... advertising for a Summer School Fair ! There is one in my street for a school in Weston Road. Who on earth from my street would like to go to a school fair over there ? Please parents, have consideration for your neighbors and don't play the State Agents game. Unless we have kiddies attending a specific school, we do not want to go to some tedious summer school fairs.

I think it is less advertising for the event itself than advertising for the estate agent... for which they pay a certain amount to the school's fund raising. So, yes, it does mean more boards up for a while, which isn't great, but it is a good way for the school to raise quite a lot of money. Anthony Pepe are sponsoring South Harringay's fair this year...... but with no boards

When is the Weston Road school fair ? There are rules about how long before and after an event the boards can be displayed.

Well done to Anthony Pepe.

Banal phrases that turn me right off - " Proud sponsors of.... "

I can just see the smiling estate agents walking home with head in air and renewed spring in their step knowing that they have sponsored a school fair

They should remember that pride comes before a fall.

@ Tom.

This is an issue that comes up every year. It's not about community spirit, other than that many members of our community are not happy with the visual pollution caused by these boards and they have a right to say so.

We have one most years too, for NHP (though as Gillian commented, this year I think they may not do them). The PSA gets a good amount of the money from them, I don't see a problem with it while others are having similar signs when selling or renting their place. If people don't like them why not start a campaign to ban them everywhere instead of just picking on the school fair ones?
No you have missed the point. We understand the board is advertising for the estate agent. Our point was that its raising valuable funds for the local school of our daughter and many other children on the ladder.

Scaffolding, skips, unruly, rubbish filled gardens.....a small blue sign nestled next to a bush is probably on the lesser scale of visual pollution. But of course not denying people's right to post and am sorry if people are left "fuming" as some clearly are.

As for avoiding eye contact with over 50s and "behaving like conquerers", we get on very well with both our neighbours thanks very much. But what a delightful description of how "newcomers" behave.

Why do you care about a notice board advertising a school fair? I wish I had time to notice them; whilst walking along ladder roads I never have time to look up, as our streets are plastered with dog turds and human spit. I know what I'd rather have outside my house.

TBD* Can i politely point out that you mean 'Estate agents' (not 'state agents' which might mean secret police) - Thanks

Here you go again Therèse. Haven't you got anything better to do than offend your new neighbours? Why would they wish to talk with you when you dish out such vitrol towards them on an online forum? Are you one of those old school residents who don't consider newcomers locals until they've lived here for 20 years? If that were the case you'd be offending the majority on HoL.

I'm a newcomer. It's not in my nature to talk to strangers, but living on the Ladder has changed that (HoL has certainly broken barriers). Give them time and they might give you eye contact or even say hello, but if they've read your posts, and know who you are, I can't imagine they'll give you the time of day.

One of the nice things ( maybe the only thing ) about my advanced age is being able to smile at women in the street and get a smile back. ( on second thoughts, probably they don't see me as a danger any more - that's not so nice  )

Just out of curiosity, how much do the estate agents donate?

They don't donate anything: they pay for the advertising space.
