The footage shows the devastating fire that gutted the old St Paul's church on Wightman Road.
The new church, was opened ten years later.

An example of how impossible it is to extinguish a fire that has firmly taken hold. Interesting that the fire fighters weren't wearing breathing equipment. Made me sad, though. I was christened at that church.
Thank you for posting this, Hugh - fascinating and awful to watch. Seeing the roof collapse reminded me of the Notre Dame fire that we all watched earlier this year. I didn't know any footage was still available, and I'd like to link it to our church website if I can and if that's OK with you.
I believe the date of the fire was 1984, not 1983.
I'm hoping to make an oral history of the fire and capture people's memories on film, so if you know of anyone with first-hand knowledge of the old church or the fire I'd love to hear from them.
