Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Update on progress at junction of Endymion Road and Alroy Road
After a long campaign working with residents, resident associations and the LCSP I have received the following from the Engineering Projects Manager at Haringey Council.
"Following concerns raised by residents and members regarding pedestrian safety at the junction of Alroy Road and Endymion Road, I am pleased to inform you that we have arranged for feasibility studies and preliminary design to identify appropriate interventions for improving accessibility for pedestrian and cyclists at this junction.
This work will be carried out by Ringway Jacobs over the next few months and I will update you in April of the recommendations . It should be noted that any recommendations arising from this exercise will need funding identified and secured to proceed further."
This is good news. I will continue working with the council to identify funding to make this extremely dangerous junction safer for residents and cyclists.

As a cyclist I don't have any problem with the junction itself, but the 30mph speed limit on Endymion Road is a cause of frequent danger.
Particularly riding eastbound, despite being able to do 25mph comfortably I have to decide whether to allow drivers enough room to overtake safely (which they often don't because of oncoming traffic), or riding in a position that prevents them doing so. It shouldn't require explaining what the effect of the latter option is.
I ride 6 miles each way daily. Most of Islington is a pleasure (the cycle lanes on Drayton Park are superb), but the only bit of my commute that I really hate is Endymion and Wrightman Roads and it's purely because of the way motorists are allowed to behave.

Residents have been telling us for some considerable time how dangerous it is to cross at the junction of Alroy Road and Endymion Road. We agree and that is why we are campaigning along with local residents to install a pedestrian crossing at this very busy and dangerous junction. This route is used by many residents to get to Finsbury Park and it is unacceptable that despite the council agreeing with us that the junction is dangerous they have been slow in responding the issues raised.
Our continued pressure has resulted in the council agreeing to do some feasibility studies and preliminary designs which is fantastic news. Unfortunately, despite these being scheduled for earlier in the year we have been told that the consultants tasked with carrying out this work have experienced some delays and the report will not be available until the end of May.
We will of course be continuing our campaign to get this work done and make this junction a safer place for all our residents to cross the road.

I cross at this junction from time to time and I agree that it is either slow (to cross) or hazardous for pedestrians. Sometimes I think the council is unenthusiastic about crossings; one of the justifications for their enforcement of parking regulations – to a fault – is to keep (vehicular) traffic flowing.
This is not the only location in the Borough where there is need for better attention to the needs of pedestrians.
