It is a male - which you no doubt www chasing off a rival for that nice breeding hole a woodpecker (possibly this one) has created for the purpose...

It was there again this morning at 09.00, doing it's "Spring Drumming" and then flying off to join another woodpecker on a high branch where they sat together for a while. However I didn't have my zoom lens

Hi Paulie, this tree was on the path 20 yards south of the paddling pool. They both seem to hang out a lot around the Abbeyville Road entrance. To be honest (s)he's all over the shop...
