Turnpike Lane DJ goes underground to make new electro sound

Turnpike Lane based Ben Langham, better known as Ben Phaze, has started to attract attention with his unique club music made by sampling sounds recorded from the London Underground. 

Ben's music is being featured in the second year of London Underground's art exhibition Out of Uniform. The show which opened on Monday is dedicated to work by LU staff.

Ben makes his music by walking the lines at night to sample sounds and record noise from escalators, machinery and commuters before mixing them into his music. Recordings are gathered from all over the Tube network, from the familiar ticket gates and announcements to the less well know reverberations in abandoned tunnels and rushing of underground waterways.

In addition to working on London Underground, Ben has been a DJ for 14 years and has performed everywhere from London's Transport Museum to Glastonbury Festival, and Europe to Australia.
