Canan is a writer, literary translator, editor and screenwriter working mainly in French, English and Turkish, including Dutch and Spanish. She was born in Istanbul, grew up in Brussels and has studied in Belgium and in Montreal, Canada. Today she lives in Amsterdam, but will be moving to London for the duration of the residency.

After having worked for the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels (BOZAR) and the British Council in Amsterdam, she established herself as a freelancer to work independently on literature, comics and film projects.

“My current focus is on contemporary Turkish literature and comics. I am also closely engaged with children’s literature. Among my activities as a literary translator is the work I do with French publisher Publie.Net on editing, translating and promoting contemporary Turkish writing through a yearly anthology entitled Meydan | la place

I also want to be more active in sharing Turkish contemporary writing with wider audiences, including young people and communities who don’t always have the opportunity to be exposed to contemporary literature in its many forms, including comics.

This is part of what I will focus on during my residency at the Free Word Centre, working together with other passionate translators, writers, artists and organisations who share the drive to take translation further.”
