Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Apologies if this is off topic or in the wrong place, but I wasn't sure where to put it.

I've lived in Haringey for the last three years, on Mattison Road and Fairfax Road for two, and now I live in Tottenham, near Downhills Park. I joined HoL quite a while ago, and I find it to be an invaluable resource - it's fantastic that the area has something like this.

I hope no-one takes offence at me asking about this on here, but my question is this: does anyone know of any other, similar local online communities around? I've seen one for Stroud Green, for example (stroudgreen.org). Is there one for Tottenham/Seven Sisters area? (I'm sure someone will suggest I Google it, but believe me, I've tried, to no avail).

This is not to detract from the value of this place - I think HoL is a fantastic resource, and I realise you do occasionally cover things in my local area - the Fair Deal supermarket, for one. And there was a thread about Seven Sisters recently. I just wish there was something similar for Tottenham. Or perhaps something could be incorporated into this site? (Although I understand the main focus is Harringay).

I don't know of anything, I'm afraid. I live in South Tottenham and have been looking too... I agree that HoL is a great resource, however - lots of the stuff is relevant to me here - and I'd love to see it expand a bit further east.
Thanks for the feedback and good question. As far as I'm aware, there's nothing yet in situ for the east of the borough. With another hat on, I'm helping the local community to set up a site in the Bowes Park / Bounds Green area. I'm also at the start of a process to try and leverage support for more sites in areas including Seven Sisters.

A key ingredient is always to find people wiling to take on starting up and running a local site like this.

BTW, how do the districts break up east of here. My understanding is that there's West Green to the north-east, Seven Sisters to the east of that. Bust what's to the south of SS? How far south do locals consider SS goes? Do locals think of South Tottenham as a neighbourhood or is it more just the whole bit of the old borough of Tottenham?
Good question. I've found this (it's a .doc file hosted on the Council website). According to this, slightly bizarrely, Seven Sisters station isn't even considered to be a part of Seven Sisters - hmm...

Yes, that is a problem. It sounds like a big responsibility. Personally, although not hugely adept at the technical aspects of running a website, I would be happy to chip in as an admin or moderator (I did both for a large music community for about five years). I am sure that other people would be interested too.
According to this map I live in St Ann's, but I still use the shops and services of Harringay.

I think it would be good to have more content for surronding areas, but am unsure whether it would be better to do it under an expanded HOL or try and kick off a [South] Tottenham site. In the short term I think it is more realistic to expand HOL eastward and then if it gains enough steam split it off at a later date...
As far as I'm aware St Ann's isn't an historical district. It's an electoral district that's taken its name from a late 19th century church. Up till the church was built the road was called Hanger Lane up to where Blackboy Lane now is and and Chisley Lane running east after that.
Ooof, you can forget that map. It's just electoral boundaries. Only a slight resemblance to the real world at the best of times. As I learned when I was scrubbing up the Wikipedia article on SS recently the area round the tube is THE heart of the SS neighbourhood.

But you're West Green, non?

Is this about right for West Green?:

I've always thought I was in West Green - I am electorally - but am just outside the north western boundary on your map. Where do those boundaries leave the people between the blue line and Turnpike Lane tube?
You probably do live in West Green Sarah. The map is very much drawn as a question to which I feel unqualified to provide an answer.

Where should the boundary go in your opinion?

Easy to draw a Google map. Just log into your Google A/C, go to maps, click My Maps (Top right beneath where it says Google Maps), then under that click "create a new map", then just inside te map picture click the little icon that looks like a graph, click away to create your line, then save.
That council map seems to take the boundary up to Green Lanes and Westbury Avenue, which feels more like a natural break.

It's hard to tell though. Where I am is a bit of a no-man's-land anyway - not quite Harringay, not quite Wood Green. My street is the last one in N17, so technically north Tottenham, but I hardly ever go to Tottenham High Road so don't really feel connected in that direction.
Forget postcodes, forget council maps; decide what you think feels like a natural neighbourhood to you and the people in your locality. That's what a neighbourhood is.

Also, with London, there are rarely hard and fast boundaries.

What I did was to take the 17th century heart of West Green and take a rough radius out from there. I'd always thought of the hinterland of TP Lane tube to be Wood Green, but what do I know.
I'd like to get involved in setting up a clone of HoL for Seven Sisters / South Tottenham. I raised this last year at a neighbourhood forum meeting, a couple of people including Cllr Isidoris agreed but then we never followed it up. So is this now the time to get started? I have some/minimal web skills and a little spare time coming up.

I think 7Sis and South Tottenham are pretty synonymous. Take the three wards Tottenham Green, Seven Sisters and West Green, that's all within about a mile of the stations (S Tottenham overhead rail station is also right here). Maybe Tottnm Hale too. I'm not that fussed about boundaries, eg I lurk on the HoL site a lot.

The name SoTo was mooted.

Meet in the Fountain?

Pam
I forgot, there is this site - 1.0 style, but lots of historical stuff.
