Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all,

Has anyone else been experiencing theft of spring flowers (whole plants taken) and strange wanton destruction (chunks of leaves cut off daffs) from their front gardens?

Hello, Nemone.
Your posting stuck a chord with me. Suffered from plant thefts from front garden on and off for years. Used to get me really wound up so I started to keep costs down to a minimum or grow stuff from seed. Began to secure hanging baskets with wire and padlocks. what a pain! Even so, you feel so cheated. The last couple of years the thieving seemed to have stopped so I got blasé and put together a pair of spectacular baskets and hung them without securing them. Thieving g**s also thought they were mighty fine and nicked them just as they were peaking. Oh well. Will be more cautious this year.

I had a very nice metallic pot plant stolen - we think not late in the evening, and ironically just after I'd returned from the neighbourhood watch meeting...They obviously hid behind the hedge and got rid of all the plants, so only the pot plant was taken.  The other one on the windowsill is still there (so far, anyway!)...

Why oh why do people do this? It' so selfish. As if they don't want to allow any other people to enjoy flowers.

Driving along Endymion Rd past Finsbury Park one day there was a woman blatantly picking all the flowering daffodils. Did she really think that they'd been planted just for her to put in a vase on her window sill?

Then there's the kids who would nick my daffs and tulips every year. Then I realised it was always on Mothers Day weekend. That one I could understand I suppose but it still wasn't right.

And then there was the 'pot' I had standing on the pillar at the bottom of my stairs. Only it wasn't a pot as such. It was a small cable drum with no fixed bottom. There was a trail of dirt across the pavement and into the road where it had obviously been put into a car.

I gave up after that.

Since I put out a sign written by my 6 year old asking 'please don't take my flowers' nothing's been taken this week! (And also one by me mentioning police, vandalism, theft, and trespassing!)

I can sort of understand it (!) if people are making use of the plants themselves, but just to pull the top of the plant off and leave it there, or to cut off daff leaves and leave them in a neat pile is just a bit weird!

Can only think it's kids doing it as some kind of stupid game.

Anyway thanks for all your comments - made me feel reassured it wasn't just me at least!
