Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

So a year after Boris pulled the carpet out from underneath our W1 bus ambitions we have a 20mph zone and traffic calming on Wightman Rd. Coincidence?

I don't think so (but i would say that, wouldn't I?). Residents on Wightman Rd had been asking the council for years for traffic calming and a 20mph zone. The council always came back with the reply that there was nothing that they could do because funding had to come from TfL as it was one of their roads.

I know our local politicians (and some not so local) had a lot to do with the work done on Wightman Rd but I would also like to raise my glass to the hard work of Old-Age-Emporium who collected more than 250 signatures in support of the W1 bus (before it was kyboshed by Boris) and I think those of us enjoying the slower traffic on Wightman Rd should too.

PS I'd be interested to hear back from any local politicians about whether or not the W1 bus effort made getting the traffic calming easier. Is it worth us undertaking these oblique projects to force government's hand?

And where would it stop? And where would the traffic go when the bus stopped? Just sit behind it until it moved again? In an area that's extremely congested already? Good grief.
As for Boris, he's doing way better than Ken, and is not the raving egomaniac Ken became towards the end. I don't consider the word Boris an expletive.

What's next, a Ladder bus route?

Why are you missing expletives, OAE?
What's next, a Ladder bus route?
Sure. Hadn't you noticed that Wightman is one of the two most essential Ladder components? Where would your Seymour rung be without it?

As for where would it stop?
Outside my front window and at four/five other points on each side of WR agreed with residents living nearby.

where would the traffic go when the bus stopped?
Public transport would have precedence. This would occur perhaps twice every 30 minutes. Really impatient private vehicle drivers would eventually find other routes (thus reducing any congestion) - or become less impatient over time (thus reducing blood pressure and road rage).

As for Boris: I admire him as a classical scholar of some note and as an occasional bumbling game show host.

Why are you missing expletives, OAE?
Whenever your posts omit expostulatory phrases, Anette, such as 'crap crap crap crap' / 'off with his/her head' / 'what utter c--ts' etc., I tend to interpret your mild disagreement as a resoundingly positive vote in favour. So I've put you down as a definite W1Bus supporter.
Hear, Hear OAE

perhaps if others kept their cars off the road, there might be room for Public Transport for the elderly, people in Wheelchairs, people with children in pushchairs, who don't have cars.. (In fact, those who are doing more for the country's emissions totals, than those who zip down to Sainsbury in the car and buy up all the eco cxap) .. but who cares about them anyway..? They should've thought of that 40-50 years ago when they moved to ladder...!

Oh, Cameron's 'Big idea' for a better society just went out of the window... let's just run over all that get in the way..
Pie in the sky OAE, it wil never happen. Never. And I don't think even estate agents would sell Wighman Road as a ladder road.
Ladder: a framework in the form of two long parallel members connected by several parallel rungs or steps fixed to them at right angles, for climbing up or down.
Anette, why are you casting aspersions on my long parallel member as distinct from your silly little rung? Just wait and see.
No idea what you're talking about I'm afraid Stephen.

But getting back to the constructive discussion, I can see why OAE would want a bus and I understand why others object. Is there any sort of half-way house? What about some sort of local ride share scheme as a stop-gap OAE? If something were to be set up online where those with cars could offer to help out people wanting occasional or regular rides? I know it's not what you're after, but if t could be done, would it be of any interest to you OAE?
Excuse me Jeremy .. I don't know who you are or what you are on about either..

and if you check back, you'll find that the IDEA for a W1 bus started with MY constructive discussion..

No, I'd be against a ride-share, because it is the typical cop-out for pro-car users..
Why should people without their own means of transport be beholden to others? 'Stop-gap' ideas tend to drag on for decades and is typical of the 'do-it-on-the-cheap' attitude to public transport.

Everyone surely has a right to mobility and independence (as long as possible). Most elderly people/those on low incomes are not on line anyway.. It's easier to plant a few bus stops and run a bus.

But that's not your agenda is it JeremyS?
Good idea, then, Stephen, but I'm not sure it's one who's time is now. I'm a supporter of public transport, but realpolitik says the cake in the UK has got very small and it won't go round any more. So, while my suggestion of ride-share might not be an ideal option, we're in a situation now when helping each other out is going to be the only solution in many cases.

As I understand it the W1 has been ruled out. It's unlikely to be ruled back in again in the current climate of spending cuts. So if the mobility of people without their own transport is to be addressed, we have no choice but to look for another solution.

This isn't a political issue for me. I'm wondering if there's a way forward. Maybe there are better ideas than mine. Let's kick some around.
No Jeremy, we can already call on the half-way house of the 'Dial-a-Ride' Noddy bus. Those of us who've lived on Ladder Wightman for between one-third and half its lifetime tend to take the longer view, seeing the problem sub specie aeternitatis. It's Steve's W1 bus or nothing!
