Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Once again this fine old block of a purpose-build pub (inn?) has been boarded-up.

As of late-January '11 there is no sign of activity and no agent's-board on display either.

Does anybody know what is happening to this building? Is it doomed for demolition or re-development - perhaps it'll become a bookies? I don't think there's one nearby.

I'd love to take charge of it and enter an unknown world of a licensee to make it a place that decent people want to go to for socialising and entertainment.

I've got plans...

Information is gratefully received.

Do you or an acquaintance know the owners Steve?

Why would their 'plans' have taken a year?

I'd love for someone who would care about the pub and the area to take charge as well. I wasn't a huge fan of the alternative / rock incarnation (as much as those appeal) because the premises have so much more to offer to everyone.

I don't imagine the betting shop is likely as the old Burger King nearby seems to be in line for that as the notice I just saw says.

I guess the problem is the size of the pub which means higher investment costs and a greater need to ensure a lot of destination custom to create a vibrancy that brings people back.

But the potential - A beer garden with greenery for summer? A sheltered area (meaning a more pleasant environment for those who smoke, relating back to a previous post)... A great front of pub area for a more traditional feel... and then a back room that could easily be seperated to keep the front busy and bustling or used for community or group functions, a weekend disco (ah go one - alternative / rock) or anything else...

If it was going to work I think a good bit of marketing would be needed and the sort of community minded involvement that has made the Big Green Bookshop viable and hopefully profitable... but with the transport links, and a community that still enjoys a good drink, there's enough potential to bring the nice drinking folk of the area in and discourage the less pleasant elements.

Good luck Lol and keep us informed - I think you'll get a lot of support if you can make this work...

Would like to see it back up and running but like others in this link not as it was before. It would be great if we could have a pub / cafe / theatre / cinema / dance / music / function venue - so lacking around here and certainly well located so could work. Keep us updated as more info comes about.

I used to love the Queens Head when I first moved to London up until it turned into the woeful Sports Zone, whereupon not only the place was ruined in terms of its atmosphere but the internal fabric of the building was destroyed including the original bar. I have always thought that this end of Green Lanes needs an anchor like the pub used to provide and some sort of hub including it, the old cinema turned into a community cinema/theatre/performance space and venue, and the garden extended into the used car plot would provide this par excellence in a perfect world. Oh well, shame I didn't win the huge lottery prize last week!

Like many large pubs within the Borugh

Suprised it's not been taken over for Flat's

Noticed several other later built Pub / Resturants have been pulled down

As owners can no longer afford to pay costs of keeping them unused

Joys of a Smoking Ban & Supermarket prices

I wonder if the owners of the Salisbury Arms down the road be interested in taking the Queens Head over. There does not have to be in direct competetion between them. Both pubs can offer slightly different  enviroment and atmoshpere. Many suggestions have already been made in previous messages.
If the good folk from the Salisbury take it over, I hope they manage to do a better job with the ladies' loos... ugh! Biggest discrepancy between lovely pub vs. horrible toilets ever!
Another Salisbury - you mean soulless, over-priced with miserable staff?  It may be comparatively alright, but if we're talking hypothetically can't we imagine a little more ambitiously?

Completely disagree with your negative view of the Salisbury. And anyway, if they are miserable staff, who cares as the building is a joy. I did ask them whether they would be interested in the Queens and the manager said 'no'. It's a pub that has been a few different things in recent years but none of them have worked.

well.. there you go ..so the Queens Head needs a little more soul. Pricey? yes but not extortionate, miserable staff? no. But if we get more ambitious then we are in real danger of letting the Queens Head going back to aptly descibed earlier as a SportsDirect with cooking oil. Oh and the point about toilets by Clair is also fair.

If you think this  is a loss you should look at Tottenham.  So many bars have gone.  You might think they deserve to go but everytime they go you get another block of flats.  That means more traffic and less space for people to hang out in.  Older local people suffer paticularly because these old pubs are handy and they can sit in there and meet their neighbours or drinking friends.  I hear the Antwerp Arms on Bruce Castle Park is now only open on match days and that is a shame as I used to drop in there occasionally.
