Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The old post office and other empty retail places: what will happen next?

Builders have started clearing out the old post office. Does anyone know what this is going to become?

Is there any info on the fate of other empty places, like Santander next door, the furniture shop opposite (that used to be fairline but became a Turkish restaurant for a while).

And what about the tiny Vietnamese restaurant next to the Salisbury, gathering dust since it closed.

A lot of building work was taking place at Pentadaktilos, the Cypriot Men’s social club opposite the Salisbury  that closed last year. But the building site has been locked well before the lockdown.

The fish and chip shop that uses to be a Greek record shop has sadly been gone for a while. I wonder what will happen here and other places that I can’t think of right now.

This may not be a top priority at the moment. But whatever happens next could be Crucial to the future identity of the neighbourhood.

Someone said residents have until the 15th of June to accept or reject the application for the proposed licence at these premises...not quite sure where you would do that though. If anyone knows it would be great if they could share the link. I am personally not keen on another bookies or games shop...

From the notice it looks like the option available is to email licensing@haringey.gov.uk

I think the introduction of a shop specialising in gambling & Fixed Odd Betting Terminals would be a terrible addition to the area, it’s pretty well documented that they’re highly addictive & lead to an increase in anti social behaviour, and of course they’re disproportionately targeted to deprived boroughs with poorer residents. Here’s an interesting read on Newham council pushing back on them: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/nov/03/high-stakes-battle-... and another on the negative ways they affected the area & the lives of it’s residence https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/may/17/its-money-ill-never...

The FOBTs are supposed to be less evil now the maximum stake is down to £2 (? £4) from the original £100. So it now takes all day for someone to shovel in their rent/ launder that week's pimp profits.

Objecting to bookies etc you can't just say you hate it, you have to give valid reasons eg it's near a school.  Much more difficult than domestic developments. See LBH website for more info, I'm off elsewhere at the mo. They claim they create jobs, but it's very few jobs as they are often left after hours with one single cashier, which can be a very vulnerable position.

Bookies/gambling sites become a comfortable warm dry place for single men with no nice living space to hang out all day. That can then become a nuisance to those who don't like walking through the groups smoking outside etc. But that's not a valid reason to object to the licence.

I think it's highly likely this will get rejected, even if it didn't receive a reasonable amount of objections.

One doesn't need to look further than the objections to the extended opening hours application for 'Casino' on Green Lanes. These were related to antisocial behaviour and the fact that this proposition preys on the most vulnerable out there. Both very legitimate claims. This contributed towards a rejection of the application, so will surely work in this case also.

I must say I am quite amused by the feeble defense of these establishments as a 'comfortable place for single men.' It conjures up a Dickensian lack of amenities that I am not sure I see today, nor do I see why these individuals should be paying 'rent' in the form of the losses they incur whilst luxuriating in the comforts of a betting shop...

Not a defence! Just an observation.  And part of any discussion re licences, though I don't think having a load of bored blokes hanging round all day (not even necessarily using the machines) is grounds for objections. And BTW if I lived in an HMO and shared a room with four bunks in and no living room, I'd want to find other places to meet my pals. If you look closely, they are all around us.

Agreed - not grounds for objection, yet objectionable in its own right. To be perfectly honest I don't particularly fancy HMOs either.

There has got to be a way to design out a lot of the undesirable aspects of the high street - surely rejecting another gambling premise should take us one step closer in that direction...

I just noticed the attached poster in the window of 13-15 grand parade indicating that construction has started. I haven't seen builders so far and still don’t know what it’s going to be. This used to be Fairline supermarket since forever and after that a short lived restaurant and furniture shop.  Does anyone know what the next instalment will be?

You clearly need to start reading HoL more assiduously!

Oooops looks like I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. Thanks for the link though. Actually, I noticed the flats being built behind the shop recently in Salisbury red, but it didn’t occur to me that this was part of the plans for the shop
