Can anyone tell me when the Mushroom at Turnpike Lane was taken away. It used to be a great meeting place for friends and family.

As I moved out of London many years ago I don't know the answer I'm afraid but I remember the structure well. So distinctive that you could tell anybody to meet there with an (almost) 100% guarantee that they would find it and not end up halfway up Turnpike Lane! As I think it was part of the original design for the station I'm surprised it wasn't listed. Pity if it has gone completely.

Many thanks for your reply Geoff. Yes I also thought it would have been listed. However I suppose the person who authorized it to be demolished did't know how important it was for people as a matter of interest.
Also my thanks to Jez for posting the link for a picture. It really took me back in my mind seeing those people (obviously) meeting there.
This was the backdrop to my first "contact" with a policeman being suspicious of youngsters! My school was asked if any of the older lads wanted to take part in a traffic survey to show how pedestrians were using the old bus islands at the East end of Turnpike Lane. I think it was so they could authorise their subsequent removal! There were several of us scattered around listing numbers of people etc etc so over comes an officer demanding to know what is happening. He went off once we'd shown him our council instructions but I wasn't impressed at being quizzed when I was not doing anything remotely criminal. At least it got me ready for a lifetime of answering police questions when I was undertaking accident surveys for work....... Ho hum
