So...the monster recycling bins have arrived in the east of the borough (in my part of it, at least- not sure if they did the whole section in one hit?)
Unsurprisingly, I came home from work yesterday evening to find several sets of neighbours boggling over how we're going to fit them all in, commenting on how coming home felt like 'walking through a corridor' and in another case, bargaining over sharing one in a bid to steal back some garden space.
I don't think I've ever seen my street unite with such neighbourly spirit before :D
Seriously though, it's not helped the streetscape one bit and I'm disappointed that flats with shared gardens have been treated as houses to create these bin parks. I'm lucky in having enough space to deal with two additional bins so I probably won't be applying for smaller ones myself unless neighbours are keen to do so, but it'll be interesting to see how many others send them back!
How are others in the east of the 'hood finding the new additions?

Yes, I was pretty unimpressed at being given the leaflet at the same time as the bins, which prevented any possibility (for those not already in the loop) of requesting smaller bins before the deed had been done which seems ridiculous given the extra work it will create.
I also fear that the council thought they'd get an easy ride here so why bother taking the trouble to ask people first? For me, it's more the principle of it than anything else - our garden is big enough that it's not an issue for us but I do not like the fact that we weren't asked, and that even as someone who has an all-too-obvious interest in the matter, I struggled to find the information we were supposed to have been provided with before this week.
Why guess, Anne? As - I recall - you're active in the residents group why not simply phone Veolia and ask them?
And why I wonder, channel everything through Nilgun? The "big woman/man" cabinet system may work well in a Polynesian system of local clans and competing factions, but for UK local government it's dysfunctional.
My apologies for getting that wrong, Anne.
For basic information I find it's best to go to the 'front door' of people actually doing the job. Of course, a bit of detective work behind the scenes is sometimes needed. And can be fun.
Using the phone number on the leaflet we asked Veolia for - but have not yet had - a smaller bin. I'm not sure Nilgun could have managed the number of calls required. Especially as - temporarily - the Council's website gives the wrong phone number for her.
Any chance of them cleaning the bins? Some of them are getting very dirty.
I'm sorry but... whats wrong with cleaning your own bin..?
