Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Thanks to the attached Haringey Council officer report there is more publicly available detail about participation in MPIM 2015.

The highlight of participation will be a panel discussion on the investment opportunities in the borough. Last year Cllr Strickland spoke on the Transforming Tottenham panel, while Nick Walkley watched from the front row. No information on why the chief executive is not attending this time.

There are four council representatives going. Lyn Garner (Warzone Director) and Cllr Strickland are again making their way to the French Riviera. While Cllr Kober and Daniel Hawthorn (Assistant Director for Regeneration) are making their Cannes debut.

The early bird registration fee is 1590 euros, but no word yet on whether the £288.50 per night Cannes Palace hotel is being used again for accommodation. The estimated cost for flights, travel, and accommodation is £7,000.

Pipers are being commissioned for this work and they will organised meetings. Involvement in the London at MIPIM stand will cost £18,000.

Getting the Tottenham Model - currently on display at the John McAslan N17 Studio - to Cannes will cost £3,000. While, sundries are £2,000.

Add this all together and the claimed maximum total cost is estimated to be £30,000. Though, it is said sponsorship will be sought. Last year the sponsors were: Tottenham Hotspur FC (£3.5K), Lea Valley Estates (£2K), Grainger (£3.5K), Hermes (£2K), and, Trowers & Hamlyn LLP (£2K).

The decision to attend was signed-off by Tracie Evans - chief operating consultant - and Cllr Arthur. Which is an appalling decision by the Cabinet Member for Resources & Culture at a time when he is proposing cuts to vital support services. The Cannes cost will be met from wider departmental budgets.

It is claimed that there is no conflict of interest in meeting anybody who might profit from regeneration schemes as Haringey Council is attending as the landowner not the planning authority.

The biggest con is the claim that going to Cannes will help realise residents' ambition for the borough.

The benefits of attending MIPIM 2014 are said to be increasing increase in the investment opportunities and that many potential investors have visited the borough. But, not a single contract signed. Maybe Tottenham cake doesn't fuel business like a Cannes cocktail?

My FOI request about MIPIM 2015 should provide some finer detail.
