Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Walking along New River today between Hampden Road and where it goes under Wightman Road we found a swan, quite distressed,s stuck in the water between the two sets of grills trapping rubbish.  Anyone know whether it has been reported.  I met a nice lady who said she would call Thames Water.  I will give the RSPCA a go.  Any guidance gratefully received.

On a separate note.  The water is very low and I was wondering whether anyone had heard of any plans to clean this spot of river as it is full of rubbish and dumped items?

Thanks!

How upsetting! Did you have any luck with the RSPCA??

I have reported it now so I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.  Apparently they dont call back and update you so if anyone walk there tomorrow and still see it stuck please post here and I will follow up again.

I just went down to have a look at couldn't see anything from the road by the mosque (next to Hampden Road).  Is it a bit of a walk down towards the path that joins back up with Wightman?

Yes it was right down the other end where the grills are where the river goes underground.  Will take a walk tomorrow but dogwalkers may be out earlier...

I've just called the RSPCA.  They wanted me to go back down to monitor it, but I'd feel a bit dubious walking down by the canal on my own in the dark. They've said they're passing the information on to their officers to investigate.

The RSPCA officer has just called to say they've been out to see him but were unable to free him, so they've called a specialist swan charity who are going to rescue and relocate him tomorrow.

Hi Helen. Thanks very much for the update, much appreciated.  I had a couple of missed couples but you couldnt call back on the number.

This happened at exactly the same place earlier this year - two swans were trapped and there were three others free on the other side of the metal grille distressed at the other birds' plight but unable to do anything about it. I and another walker who had also spotted the trapped swans kept in touch over a few days while we contacted Thames Water (who own the land and the installation) and the RSPCA - I forget exactly who eventually investigated and freed the swans, but it took longer than we expected and we had to keep up pressure.

Walkers along that stretch should be vigilant as this is a trap for these birds and they don't have the wherewithal to work out that escape is possible by walking/swimming back to the bank behind the grille area - which is how they got there - they only see the way out as through the grille, so it would ultimately be fatal unless rescued. Should Thames Water now be making this grille inaccessible to the swans?

You're right, Thames Water should fix this hazard.

For wildlife problems, Enfield Wildlife Rescue is good www.wras-enfieldwildlife.org.uk (07970 141282)

At around midday today we saw Thames Water come to attempt to free the swan.  Fingers x.  Will try to go and have a look tomorrow

We have a happy ending!  My son and I took a walk today and the swan wasn't there and on our way back we were greated by the reunited pair gliding on the river in the sunset.  No idea how they got it out.

Wonderful!
