Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last Sunday I visited Harringay Market for the first time. I purchased some good grass fed meat direct from a farm in Kent, some kale, organic and locally produced, and some delicious South American chocolate. It was a nice atmosphere. Winkworth sales director, Michael Persaud, also visited the market with his wife and two boys.

As with HoL, Harringay Market is great for the area and gives the Harringay community a real heartbeat. And like HoL, many local residents still don’t know about it. In order for the market to continue, the traders need to make a decent profit. I understand that the seafood stall didn’t return because the income generated was not sufficient. The traders need customers and it is in the interest of local residents to support the market, to promote it, and to attract more visitors.

You might have noticed some small Harringay Market Posters pinned on the posts of some of our Winkworth For Sale boards in the area. They are quite small and not very noticeable so I discussed another idea with Jessica: We could print a number of full size boards advertising Harringay Market. The problem with this is that it would require local volunteers who would allow the board to be displayed outside their house. And we would need a minimum number to make it a viable and worthwhile campaign.

So, I had the idea of starting a thread on HoL to rally support for the market and generate a list of supporters that would allow a Harringay Market advertisement to be displayed for 6 weeks outside their house. The board post would be fixed using straps not nails to ensure that no damage is caused.

I am open to suggestions and if anyone has any other ideas do let me know. If you appreciate the market and want to participate, please inbox me or respond to this thread.

Elan, I'd just like to say a big thank you for posting the original message and for the support you're giving to HM!

As David Sexton mentioned in his recent article for the Evening Standard, many people have never heard of Harringay, or they mistake it for Haringey. "Harringay" has a weak identity. But nonetheless, a Harringay community is emerging, with more personality than ever! Thus the opportunity presents itself to nurture this identity, which is distinct from surrounding neighbourhoods. The creative energy that makes this community website a reality, or that brings Harringay Market into being, is the kind of creative energy that will continue to carve out Harringay's emerging identity.

Jessica, I think there have only been three slight quibbles (from Therese, John D and myself) about the Winkworth or, more generally, the estate agents' boards connection. That certainly doesn't make us some class of anti-Marketeers. Yes, Elan may think it naive of me, but in my book a good cause in a community deserves a leg-up from concerns which take most from the community. This would be best done by covert support with no overt advertising on behalf of the giving party. I suppose I see estate agents as the "extractives" in the community - a hangover from my decade in Sierra Leone where we watched the diamond, iron ore and bauxite "extractives" laying waste to landscape and communities. Even when prevailed upon to think about some social payback, or even restoring the topsoil, they could only do so with great publicity and trumpet blowing. Villagers were meant to be impressed and grateful.

Elan, Harringay's "weak identity" would be greatly strengthened if Winkworth could stop describing it as some sort of accidental offshoot of Crouch End.

Agreed. It's not helpful to describe Harringay as an offsheet of Crouch End. I will make an effort to ensure this doesn't happen.

I do appreciate your point of view. The monetary system is fundamentally flawed.
