Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last Sunday I visited Harringay Market for the first time. I purchased some good grass fed meat direct from a farm in Kent, some kale, organic and locally produced, and some delicious South American chocolate. It was a nice atmosphere. Winkworth sales director, Michael Persaud, also visited the market with his wife and two boys.

As with HoL, Harringay Market is great for the area and gives the Harringay community a real heartbeat. And like HoL, many local residents still don’t know about it. In order for the market to continue, the traders need to make a decent profit. I understand that the seafood stall didn’t return because the income generated was not sufficient. The traders need customers and it is in the interest of local residents to support the market, to promote it, and to attract more visitors.

You might have noticed some small Harringay Market Posters pinned on the posts of some of our Winkworth For Sale boards in the area. They are quite small and not very noticeable so I discussed another idea with Jessica: We could print a number of full size boards advertising Harringay Market. The problem with this is that it would require local volunteers who would allow the board to be displayed outside their house. And we would need a minimum number to make it a viable and worthwhile campaign.

So, I had the idea of starting a thread on HoL to rally support for the market and generate a list of supporters that would allow a Harringay Market advertisement to be displayed for 6 weeks outside their house. The board post would be fixed using straps not nails to ensure that no damage is caused.

I am open to suggestions and if anyone has any other ideas do let me know. If you appreciate the market and want to participate, please inbox me or respond to this thread.

Hi, I'm in Hornsey Park Road and I'd be happy to have. Harringay Market sign outside my house for 6 weeks. Hopefully it would let my neighbours, just north of the Harringay ladder, know about the market.

I'll email you directly with my details.

Great idea, Elan.

Hi, I wonder if it is worth contacting local schools and asking them to put the market info in their newsletters, we quite often attend things that are advertised through school. I would be happy to make some phonecalls after the half term if this would help.

Also Facebook marketplace and Gumtree are good places for free adverts.

Regards

Pippa

That’s a great idea Pippa. This could be done at all the local schools and nurseries.

I'm in Hornsey/Ally Pally but I'd love to have a sign outside my house (particularly because I'm a trader at HM!) Just let me know what you need from me to make it happen.

Thank you Lesley and Hannah. We need at least 10 to make it viable, so another 8.

30 or more would be great.

I think the best place to ask people is probably at the market. I won't be there this weekend but next weekend I'll happily collect names and addresses of people who are happy to have a sign outside their house, we'll easily get 30!

Do we really want 30 or more estate agent's advertising boards ?

Don't forget to apply for advertisement consent from Haringey Planning.

I would also be interested in helping by advertising outside my house. I live just off West Green Road and at the moment have an estate agents board outside that could be used.

I'll email you my details.

I'd be happy to put one in my window. Would have to OK a bigger sign with my neighbours due to sharing a garden...I have already got a few local bods along via twitter though so feel like I'm doing my bit :)

Thérese, you're quite right to be wary about all this. Some of us are quite weary of similar use of estate agents' boards over six-week periods - though primary school summer fairs are even more worthy charitable causes than Harringay Market. All respect to Jessica, of course, but Harringay Market (however desirable in the minds of many) and its traders are engaged in a commercial concern, though not quite on the Winkworth or KFH scale. To my mind, Elan Silver's post is a rather weaselly insinuation of the Winkworth business into what has seemed over the past few months to be an honest and amateur community oriented promotional effort by Jessica and supporters. And why parade someone called Michael Persaud and his family into this puff post unless it's more about Winkworths than about Harringay Market?

If Messrs Silver & Persaud want to highlight Harringay Market on larger boards, with no mention of Winkworths Estate Agents and no six-week free advertising tie-in by residents of Harringay & Hornsey, that might be something to be considered. If not, where will the forest of boards stop? Haven't we enough clutter from Veolia to cope with without having our vistas blocked out with estate agents on the make?

Harringay Market has been mentioned in NHP's newsletters on at least two occasions
