Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Summer is here. So are the pollution spikes from Green Lanes' grill restaurants. Pollution w/c 13 July - N4 Ladder

As the weather warms up, many of us notice the familiar smoky smell drifting through the neighbourhood. But this isn't just the smell of barbecued meat.

The smoke released from grill restaurant chimneys contains fine particulate pollution (PM2.5 and PM1 particles). Long-term exposure to these pollutants has been linked to reduced lung development in children, poorer lung function in adults, increased risk of dementia, and a higher risk of premature death.

The frustrating part? This isn't an unsolvable problem.

Cleaner filtration systems and better emissions controls already exist. They are practical, proven, and far less costly than the long-term health impacts of polluted air. What they require is a willingness to invest in being good neighbours.

So it's time to ask: what are Green Lanes' grill restaurants prepared to do to reduce their pollution? How will they help protect the people who live, work and go to school here?

As a community, we shouldn't have to choose between supporting local businesses and breathing clean air. We deserve both.

Last week, particulate pollution exceeded the World Health Organization's daily guideline on five separate days. And if Friday felt especially unpleasant, the monitors agreed—it was one of the worst pollution days of the week.

If you believe our community deserves cleaner air, don't stay silent. Ask your favourite restaurants what steps they're taking to reduce emissions. Talk to your neighbours. Share the data. Businesses respond when their customers and community make it clear that clean air matters.

If a restaurant benefits from local customers, then surely local people have every right to expect it to do everything reasonably possible to minimise the pollution it creates.
