Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

During the first fifty years of the last century, trams and later trolleybuses were the mainstay of public transport in Harringay.

Here on HOL we have put together a really good collection of photographs of Public Transport in and around Harringay. (click on Gallery above ^ & check out the Public Transport in Harringay Album)

Many have never had the opportunity to travel on a 'proper' old fashioned British style double-decker tram. The only existing examples still in everyday service are in Blackpool & Hong Kong. So it's not always easy to be able to experience a ride on what was at one time, the main means of transport in Britain's cities.

The London Transport Museum is well known, but not so well known is Acton Depot, where many vehicles are stored: There are open days all year and a list is here:
BTW, one of the trolleybuses in the London Collection: 1253, actually saw service in Harringay and was allocated to Wood Green depot after it's original depot & routes at Hackney were converted to buses.

The problem with London's museum is the lack of space and the inability to be able to take a ride on a Tram or Trolleybus.

The East Anglia Transport Museum at Carlton Colville, near Lowestoft has a working example of a London Tram HR2 (Hilly Routes) type 1858.

There are also working examples of trolleybuses at Carlton Colville. Two London Trolleybuses are based there (260 & 1521) and often others putting in guest appearances.

London trolleybus 1201 makes an appearance in this short clip (Note the Ward's Stores, Tottenham Advert on the side of the bus - these were common on many North London Buses)

The National Tramway Museum at Crich, Derbyshire . THE place for British tram enthusiasts. Many interesting 'special days' and weekends are held at the museum and the August Bank Holiday weekend is a highlight of the 'tram year'. The are examples of London's trams at Crich along with Sheffield, Glasgow and many others, some foreign including an East Berlin tram (the only one with wheelchair access).
