Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I wandered down green lanes yesterday at around 8:30 and noticed several people sleeping rough! Including a man and a women! Both sides of the lanes.

Has this problem got out of control? Is there anything the council can do?

I have been in touch with both the Council and various homeless charities including No Second Night and they have all provided help and advice to that particular couple. They are both hardened heroin users and don't seem to want to change. You can't make people change if they don't want to.

It doesn't seem very professional for any organisation to tell you that they are hardened heroin users so that we can write them off as people who can't be helped.

It's hardly a secret. They jack up in the street in broad daylight.

So they can't be helped?

If they refuse the help they are offered, what more do you think they should do? You can't make them accept help if they don't want it.

What help have they been offered?

Well obviously there is a limit on what they are prepared to tell me and rightly so, but it is not that the Council or No Second Night Out have not reached out to them.

It is very sad!
Well the advice which has been given to me is to not be tempted to give them money to fuel their addiction. All it does is enables them to continue their self-destructive patterns.

It's not uncommon for heroin users to sublet the home they have to pay for the drugs. We would all do the same probably if we needed important medication to keep us feeling vaguely alive. Fortunatelaly most of the medication we need is prescribed on the NHS. Sadly theirs is not.
