Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello to Haringay community members.... I hope everyone had a good week?

I am looking to interact with some comrades of the community in the hope of embarking on a social project, which will bring more fantastic work to the area. I have lived in Turnpike Lane for four years and after what was a short burst of pieces by the station but it would be great to expand this. I have for the past few years been interacting with artists helping to organise wall space in East London, while I worked for an art gallery. I would love to try and organise some spaces here in Haringay and feel this would be a good start in reaching out to the community.

I have watched street art spread from East London and find large new areas in places like Penge, Camden and Dulwich. In these projects the communities have been heavily involved with helping to supply wall spaces or by supplying unwanted house paint.  If anyone knows of any walls that are in need of some TLC or if anyone would like to help out then please let me know. I regularly am asked by great artists for spaces and it would be great if I could organise some paintings in the area I live.

Thanks,

Ryan

There's a blank canvas at the header of Falkland Road, along the side of Nawroz restaurant. It's currently a fly-tippers paradise.

Hey Nick, thanks for the heads up! I will swing by that way tomorrow and see if I can speak to anyone.

What happens if members of the "communities heavily involved" don't actually want someone else's idea of "fantastic work" daubed over their wall and their neighbourhood?
Who pays for the clean-up and jet-washing of the ugliness and disfigurement. Or do we simply decide that there are no rules about respecting the ownership of property, and rules set by the elected local council? That everyone can now have and enjoy a free-for-all?

Should this new freedom be extended to graffiti taggers, commercial advertisers, estate agents' boards and others public signs? Should we be throwing open these freedoms for anyone to paint, spray, or erect signs in parks, on roundabouts, on bridges, on roadways and pavements and anywhere else?

I bet you're a lot of fun at a party Alan...

Hello Mr. Stanton, thank you for replying to this and sharing your concerns, however I wanted to try and answer some of your points and hopefully take the first steps to winning you over.

I would never tell anyone to paint on a piece of property that is not theirs or they did not have permission to paint. I would always seek permission from the owners of property and for them to also sign a permission slip. Additionally, I would get the selected artists to provide preliminary sketches for the wall proprietor making sure they were 100% happy. If for instance everything was not satisfactory then would not go ahead.  This therefore, does not add any cost to the clean up because everything is pre-approved and no need for the artwork to be removed. I feel this also does not open the door and make the borough of Haringey a free for all, which I know was a big concern for yourself.

Thanks.

Ryan. It's not only the property owner who is affected. You talk about " community ". Will you also consult the other residents who will have to live with your street art ?

Yes, I do not want to offend anyone and will listen to anyone who would like to forward an opinion

Well, for me - please don't do it.

For me, this all boils done to the quality of the art.  I absolutely loved (as I think you did too) the Leger inspired hoardings outside the Shelton Hotel and I find it genuinely uplifting to see such interesting stuff.

Do you do graffiti art? If so I'd love to see your work.

Hello Ben, I have in the past painted myself but it is has always been in the capacity of assistant. However, I admittedly am more about finding spaces for artists as they are the real talents. If you have an email I could send you a PDF of some of the walls that I have organised?

Hello, I would like to take part as an artist please. I have an autistic spectrum disorder and use art as therapy to help manage my condition. Would you have space for an artist like me? Some of my work is here with details on upcoming shows etc patricksamuel.net Please let me know?

I like to paint stars, planets, galaxies, animals, plants, trees and occasionally unusual ambiguous portraits.

Kind wishes,

Patrick.
