graffiti is street art , street art is graffiti. They both came from the same place just different expressions and style.

Ashley. Graffiti is ancient. Scratching your name on your school desk is graffiti. However there's a clue in the word 'street ART'. The frescoes of Pompei are street art. graffiti can be great art but this isn't it (in my very humble opinion.

james...popeii has nothing to do with it......'graffiti 'art' is an urban expression of art...referring to things as 'graffiti' as a short term form as a 'criminal act on public spaces' is lazy and disrespectful. the difference between 'tarditional graffiti' and street art is just style and form, but ultimately they still come under the artistic style of 'grafiti art'.

its rather like comparing expressionism with abstract art....they are one and the same but also very different.

if however we are just being lazy and saying all 'graffiti' is a criminal act of putting 'expression on walls, then that is a totally different debate.

I think there is probably a direct correlation between graffiti having "art" tagged on the end or being re-named "street art" and its commercialisation by the international art-markets - e.g. the staggering financial success of Banksy or Basquiat and their move from wall to gallery.

Interesting point about Expressionism and Abstraction, they can be  polar opposites in terms of intention, but often end up looking quite similar.

graffiti had the word 'art' tagged after it by the people who started doing it in the 70's (and before)...it was their way of saying "this isnt what you refer to as vandalism..its a form of expression...a form of art".....clearly its is a form of vandalism but for many of the earliest urban artists, prior to basquiat, who changed the game, vandalism was the only way they could express themselves.

Fair point Ashley, you're obviously more clued up on this than I am.

I suppose I meant more in terms of public perception, it didn't become popular/acceptable until it became commercially viable. At the same time, it probably lost some of its early power.

However, to be fair sometimes graffiti IS just vandalism. Expression and art not being a panacea that justifies everything.

I could smash your window and have a wealth of expressive or artistic reason's for doing it, but it would still be a really sh*t thing to do

Its a blurred line, that's for sure, but I suppose that's what make street art/graffiti uniquely interesting? :)

i hear you.....

if you can be bothered, watch banskys 'exit thru the gift shop'...its both an interesting commentary on the role of street art as a form of vandalism/expression and also a bio pic of an idiot....i found it very amusing.

Is brilliant, found a new respect for Banksy after seeing it.

Have you got a blog/tumblr of your photos?

no....i ran out of time, i have thousands though. let me know if you are interested, i mail you some.

There's a definite charm to these images, but basically its like having someone else's kids picture stuck on your fridge - permanently

indeed :)

beauty is definately in the eye of the beholder.

as an aside, before my daughter was born I used to spend most weekends walking round london hunting out and photographing street art...it twas lots of fun.

Yes please, that would be great
