Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone had their staircase repaired that could recommend the carpenter/builder who undertook the work?

Many thanks

Has anyone had their staircase repaired and could recommend someone?

Sorry to hijack your thread and thanks again for the desk...

I'm also looking for information about staircase repairs. When we took the plywood cladding off our staircase we found that the tread returns and beading are missing. I've added a photo.

I've scoured the internet to find a supplier but can't find what I'm looking for. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is it even possible to buy the missing tread returns or do they have to be individually made?

Nicholas, If you find anyone to help not via HOL could you give me their details.

Hi Tris,

When we bought our house it hadn't been touched since the 50's, everything was clad in plywood. It was quite exciting taking it all off and seeing the original house underneath. Unfortunately they had hacked a few bits and pieces off to make it all flush.

The stair case has been a bit tricky because I haven't been able to find anywhere that sells the tread returns, which is what's missing. The beading should hopefully be easier to find.

The WRP place looks like it might be able to make the returns so thanks for that. I have a profile gauge so it should be easy to match, but like you said probably expensive.

So if anyone knows where to buy stair tread returns I'd be very grateful.
I know it's probably a bit hopefull to think I can buy them off the peg. I'm hoping to get the returns in one piece without a mitre join but I think you're probably right and will end up having to do it in pieces.

WRP got back to me and said they can make the returns, but I'm not sure yet if that's in one piece, I'm waiting for a quote. I do have a mitre saw so might give your idea a try if WRP are really expensive.

Luckily we have all the spindles, are yours missing?

There is ( or used to be ) a workshop at Finsbury Park station that had staircases on display outside on the street. They may be able to help. They are on Seven Sisters close to the junction with Blackstock rd, under the railway bridge, opposite Barclay's Bank.

Thanks John, I will check that out.

Bethany, I hope you are happy with the desk.

My stairs are in the same condition as yours; missing the tread returns and beading and they've been cut off at the same point. Another issue I have is that the internal string is not straight. The thickness of the string is narrow at the top (as if imbedded in the wall) and quite thick at the bottom. The staircase had some work done to it at some point and it looks as though it wasn't correctly repositioned (I'll take a photo tonight; I'd appreciate your thoughts on this Tris).

I was actually looking for someone to do the restoration for me. I've put an add on Rated People for a carpenter to take a look but no one has taken the bait (which is a first). There are also companies online that restore staircases so I might get in contact with them, however if it means I need to have the returns made then I would be happy to do that - perhaps WRP will give us a discount if we made a bulk order?

Thank you, Tris. Here's a picture of my staircase which shows the internal stringer narrowing at the top. My impression is that when work was carried out on the house, repairs to the staircase may have been done in a less than satisfactory manner and it wasn't aligned correctly. It would've been a tight fitting at the top because of the natural barrier with the landing, however on the ground floor there is obviously more room and the stairs may not have been put back in their place. I have a storage cupboard underneath the stairs (no cellar) and will take a closer look. I know there are pieces of new timber and metal plates that have been fitted recently. I don't intend to strip or sand the staircase so I would prefer not to replace it. Thoughts?

Another thing I've noticed is that I have a chunkier newel post at ground level than I do at the top. It looks quite out of proportion, however the design is the same. My neighbour's posts are the same proportions top and bottom.

As you can see, I have the same nosing issues as Bethany.

My returns were cut off and boxed in with the trend of DIY in the 70's, with a little encouragement from TV programmes of the time. I replaced each one, screwing and gluing the D shape trim, then shaving and sanding the profile level. Thomerson's on Middle Lane, can supply these, (I went for the deeper profile.) It took two or three treads each time, ad hock till I finished, (a satisfying but thankless task, I have to tell you.)

Places like Thomersons and General Woodwork, Stoke Newington have been amazing for DIY projects over the years, great family run businesses, long shall they remain.

Thomerson's (Supply order or cut customers timber/MDF, as long as it is clear of screws or nails, which will damage their cutting machine.)

Some Skirting is higher than others on the Ladder, from what I've seen.
(Best to mail a narrow slice, or trace the existing profile to check.)

Enjoy...
Ps- the smaller trim underneath the Tread I got from WRP, and trimmed them down at Thomerson"s to match the profile.
A sad day as I learnt that General Woodwork have finally closed their doors for the last time.

I am delighted to have been served by each of these gentlemen over the past 18 years: Geffrey Bentley, David Cohen and Michael Cohen from General Woodwork Supplies, I am glad to have witnessed their expertise and knowledge, which was delivered with great charm.
I will remember them fondly for a long time to come.
I'll let you know what they quote. Although I think tris might be right, it's probably unlikely that they will be the same. I think my returns might have been rounded, I guess I need to check with my neighbours.

Has the wall been badly plastered, does it apear thiner at the top because of a thicker layer of plaster?
