St. Ann's Road Vehicle Speed Grumble
We moved into the area a year ago, more or less, and live on St. Ann's Road near the piano factory. The speeds that vehicles come down from the Hermitage Road junction to Seven Sisters Road are unbelievable. I see cars and vans doing mid-40s on that stretch regularly.
I wondered whether there had been any attempts to persuade the relevant authorities to make it a 20mph road in the past. I realise that there can't be speed bumps because it's a major ambulance thoroughfare, but speed cameras and a 20mph limit would surely help do the trick.

20mph zones need to be self enforcing as mentioned above and speed humps are often the usual method employed.

But how does this work with the places that have made most/all of their residential streets 20 mph - e.g. Portsmouth. Surely they have not put traffic calming on every road?

The first step would be to ask St Anns SNT to conduct a low viz speed survey along that stretch to assess the problem and if your suspicions are proven true then they could consider taking enforcement action. Installing a fixed speed camera is another matter and I am trying to find out who you would need to contact etc re this.

Hi I regularly cross at the zebra crossing from Warwick Gardens across St Ann's Road over to Brampton Road walking my 4 year old to Woodlands Park Nursery and have to stand their for sometimes a minate or more as cars are going so fast they cant stop in time for us to cross at the crossing, its tricky with a four year old as the cars drivers dont see the child at all?
I also feel that as this is the approach / gateway to Chestnuts Primary School and then you have Chestnuts Park and also St Ann's Hosptal that this should be a blanket 20mph. There is a lot going on along this stretch. So would fully support a blanket 20mph if you start a campaign
I would suggest getting the head of Chestnuts Primary School- the Manager of the Hospital and TFL on board as well as our 3 local St Ann's Ward councillors Cllr Canver - Cllr Brabazon and Cllr Browne - Plus the other School next the church too?
I thought it was standard to have a 20mph limit around schools ?
If you link into the schools and the St Ann's Police team together, a workshop could be carried out with the schools kids - the kids could be using the mobile speed detector with the police - The police stop the drivers and the kids tell off the driver - I have seen this before - Kids telling off grown ups - what ever next - but a lesson the driver may not forget ?

I have found out that Speed Cameras are put in place by TFL. You can contact them via their website. The person to speak to is Nick Chitty.
This site is worth a look as it has all the info on there but be quick as it's apparently about to be closed down.
I hope that helps but I suspect that by the time you've cleared all the hurdles you'll be ready for the 2012 Olympics!!

I think the neighborhood Police on St Ann's ward should be able to help with the Council to do that but I think St Ann's Road will fall under 30mph limit. A speed caution that flashes 30mph may be useful.

That might be enough to make a difference. I don't know about other peoples' experience with those - are there some locally? I'm always prompted to slow down by them (I think they maybe trigger at about 28!)

It is an involuntary action to reduce your speed when you see a speed limit sign flashing, you automatically do something about it
