Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

when I was a child, I was terrified of spiders and couldn't be in the same room with one    now I'm absolutely fascinated by their webs    there was a beautiful small oval one hanging from a willowy grass stem a few days ago   something, presumably the wind, has taken it but a much larger square one has appeared lower down    has anyone ever seen a spider start a web?   in this instance, it must have made a gigantic leap to the hedge!   SM

Have you ever seen a spider unwind a web and re-consume it, I have, and couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Apparently the large house spiders don't spin webs, they pounce on their prey.

true, I haven't seen one inside      I'm going to spend more time staring;   I'd love to see one being spun or consumed    the big square web is already splattered with insect bodies, more than usual, so I hope the spider moves soon

Have you ever seen baby spiders - utterly fascinating!

I used to be scared of spiders too but decided it was time to get a grip when I became a parent. I still don't understand why I find spiders in the sink or the bath though.

I suppose they are more visible as most baths etc are white but why do they get there via the pipes? seems like unnecessary hard work    years ago, I saw some beautiful black and bright yellow spiders but can't remember which country I was in at the time    I know I saw a black widow in Australia     ours is one of the few where all are harmless, thank goodness!

They fall in the bath by chance and can't get out.

I was on a farm in Zimbabwe years ago, I picked up a piece of fruit from the ground and a young local boy quickly knocked it out of my hand, underneath a large black spider.

scary!    has anyone seen my black/yellow specimens anywhere?    I suppose I could trace them on google but Haringey has residents from all over the world so thought maybe one of them knows?

if poss, I don't kill them now; I cover with an upturned glass, slide a pice of card underneath and deposit in garden

House spiders are entertaining as they run about the room doing god know what! Good distraction from TV etc. Although quite large they're OK to pick up and put outside. Just close your hand right around them otherwise they might do a Houdini :)

thanks for that fascinating pic   sorry, I'll stick to the glass&card, couldn't pick one up!

Neither did I until I did. Definitely keep to the 'glass & card' when it comes to cockroaches though!

I suffered from those horrible things mostly on ships

how weird!   I live in a ground floor garden flat but haven't seen a spider inside for some months until last night    I was sitting on the floor trying to sort out some papers when I noticed a large-bodied spider sauntering towards me    what a surprise    must have known he was being discussed!     I regret that my post about the beauty of webs descended into being solely about spiders
