I wondered if anyone could recommend a good (preferably local) solicitor who can deal with mortgages and so on?

I can recommend Paul James Tel 01245 457095. Email is pjames@qsfjg.co.uk
His office is in Essex, but you shouldn't need to visit anyway as everything can be dealt with by email. They also have a central London branch where you can drop off any original documents if required. His firm is on the panel of all the main mortgage companies.
