Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We have recently moved into Allison Road and I’m pondering a roof-related issue. The loft hatch door to the rear loft, ie the one in the ceiling above the top of the main flight of stairs, is glass panelled which makes me think that it was intended to act as conduit for letting light into the landing from a skylight. However, the roof was replaced about 10 years ago without any skylight and I don’t know what the previous set up was. Does anyone else have a glass hatch that is lighting the middle of the house? Or indeed know if the original purpose of that hatch was to allow light in? It would be nice to throw some more natural light into this area, but I’m not sure of the way in which it was done. I assume a skylight.... Any thoughts?

We had a rather pretty stained glass window as a loft hatch when we moved into our house in the gardens, and I know the neighbours have them too. Unfortunately the builders managed to smash ours during our refurb. I've since noticed the same window on the side of a house on Tancred Road. My guess has always been that builders just used what they had to hand - I don't imagine skylights in rooves were commonplace around here, though I may be wrong.
