Siblings from outside school catchment areas to keep their priority over local children
I am very disappointed to read that despite a majority of consultees wanting change, siblings who have moved outside of the catchment areas of schools will continue to get priority for primary school places over children living geographically closer. My son had to wait for 2.5 years to get a place in the school 0.22 miles away whilst 29 of 60 year group came from further away. How is that fair?

I read the council meeting minutes and they said: "... nearly 240 responses were received on the sibling priority proposal and the Cabinet Member advised that the responses were approximately 56% in favour and 44% against. The Cabinet Member further advised that an Equalities Impact Assessment (EQIA) was undertaken following the consultation and that the EQIA showed that there would be a disproportionate impact on certain protected characteristics and would effect people who would be moving for reasons other than out of choice. Attempts to maintain the proposal whilst managing the impact had proven unsuccessful due to the complications and the computerised nature of the application process for primary schools.
The Cabinet Member advised that, in addition, the demand for primary schools had levelled out this year and that there was still reception places available for N10 and N8 postcodes; hence the need to protect primary school places for people living locally had decreased. As a result, the report recommended that the Council would not proceed with amending the sibling priority criterion."

Meanwhile back in N4, the waiting lists are just as long as they ever were. At the very least I think that families who have moved out of the Borough, and who therefore are not paying the Council Tax that is funding their school place should NOT still get priority for siblings. Why should we as Haringey council tax payers fund places for children who live in other Boroughs? And then go paying for further siblings?

For the sake of my own sanity, I don't think I'm going to fight a fight I can't win. They won't even consider another "consultation" for another year at least by which time I will be battling to try and find a secondary school place.
