Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I went into Crouch End for the first time in ages last weekend and was really struck by the number of shops that have shut recently - Woolies we all know about, but the furniture shop (Myers?) next to it has also closed, and the premises on the the other side has not found a new owner since the cafe that was there shut six months or so ago. These are just the most obvious examples, there are quite a few others on the roads leading into the Broadway (including a bookies, perhaps the one positive note!).

I don't know what (if anything) this says for Harringay - I know we have a lot of empty premises too but I don't think we have such a large single stretch of empty shops looking so dismal. But I have often wondered about some of the larger shops like Disneys and how they keep going.

There are loads of closures between Turnpike Lane and The Shopping City - including, for some reason, a lot of shoe shops. One of the vacant stores seems to be occupied by squatters.
Are the squatters wearing very new sparkling pink shoes?

Places are shutting at an alarming rate just as jobs are being lost. The only places that are opening are gambling places for people to waste their money when the most need it.
Sadly, announced today in the Journal that Pick More Daisies has gone too - that's a real loss. It replaced a chain (Pizza Express) and was, for me, one of the best cafe/restaurants in the area. Gutted. Disney's continued survival is a constant source of amazement - particularly given how rubbish their window display is against the quality of what's actually in the shop. It's actually way better than it looks if you've never been in.

Oh, and notice that the restaurant on the corner in CE (used to be Rogers then teh Creamery) has been empty for at least 3 years now.

I did hear on the Today programme this morning that latest estimate suggest 1 in 10 High Street shops are now lying empty.
Yes, Disney's really does have good stuff! It surprised me - and the Disney brothers are very helpful. They can get in almost anything in that you're looking for and the best thing is they deliver and assemble for free! I hope they survive this recession - probably in as good a position as any having already been through a few before.

I can't believe Pick More Daisies is closing. Did they give a reason? It always seemed relatively full.
Everybody knows what really goes on at the back of disney's
