Shop Destroyed in Second Police Car Crash in Park Road Crouch End

Second crash on Park Road in less then a week                                                 Photo: Tony Lennon via Twitter

In the second incident in just over a week on the same stretch of road in Crouch End a police car hit another vehicle whilst on an emergency call on Monday night.

Police say their patrol car was travelling along Park Road in Crouch End, responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash, shortly after 8.45pm.

The marked patrol car hit an Audi driven by swimming instructor Steven Shaw from Muswell Hill. Shaw was on his way to meet friends for a night out.

Both vehicles mounted the kerb and smashed into the front of the Urban Flower Company, causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Ambulance crews attended the scene but no serious injuries were recorded.

The incident comes just a week after a police car forced a vehicle it was chasing off the road just a few metres away on the other side of the road.

Thanks - had meant to publish this yesterday and got caught up with other stuff. Duly amended.

I think that quoting the make of the vehicle and the driver's name probably has privacy implications. I might like to own an Audi but I wouldn't want anyone to know about it and judge me based on that.

On top of that, I think the Police, who are probably stuck owning BMWs privately, could have it in for Audi drivers.

I heard about this, today...i heard that "Kiss the Sky" was the other incident site (they could do with a new front though). Thankfully no one got injured hey.

It's been a bad couple of weeks for Haringey Police. On top of the two incidents in Crouch End, there was also one recently by the junction of St Ann's and Seven Sisters Road.

I don't think that last bit about the car in the first accident being forced off the road by the police is quite accurate - I think he just came around the corner too fast.  I had just gone in the Oxfam bookshop next to Kiss The Sky when it happened so I was close enough to the door to be out in the street within seconds when I heard all the noise of breaking glass - strangely there wasn't a loud bang of impact.  The police certainly weren't in direct pursuit at that point.  The driver came walking past me with a bloody head, brushed off a man who tried to tell him to wait for an ambulance, and disappeared down the road.  While the police must have arrived within a minute or two, it took a helicopter to find where the driver had gone to ground in a hidden cul-de-sac around the corner.

From what I gather from the local press, he had previously been pursued by Islington Police on the other side of Crouch Hill but they had lost him - presumably wary of provoking another accident as had occurred 2 days earlier in South Tottenham, especially as this was the middle of the day.

Before entering the Oxfam bookshop I had walked along that very stretch of pavement where the car came off the road.  So 60 seconds later I would have been mincemeat.  It certainly left me rather disturbed for the rest of the day.

Thanks for clarifying the police involvement in the KTS incident, Vaneska. Sounds like you had a close shave!

Shouldn't we have a whip around for driving lessons for the police? Or could some nice estate agent sponsor them?

Does anyone know whether the police are held accountable for their driving? Do they have to justify blue-light speeding? In my experience, they use sirens and blue lights to attend trivial incidents (a motorist arguing with a traffic warden for example) or simply to overtake traffic jams. They create the impression that there is an awful lot of serious crime about, possibly to justify their own existence

Here's what happened at Kiss the Sky:
