Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

In light of another post focused on tenants, was struck by this new campaign from Shelter to evict rogue landlords.

It's worth a look, whether you are tenant or affected by a bad landlord. Among other things, they are trying to map landlords who have been prosecuted (none yet listed for Haringey...) and have a tempate email to send to your council to press home the importance of tackling bad landlords, something that I know is dear to many hearts (mine included).

So Nilgun Canver is fooling people, is she, John? And actually wants and supports "these conversions" ie. the illegal conversion of homes into flats by owners/landlords who are breaking the planning laws. Oh, yes, provided they are "done nicely".

In which case she has been fooling me as well. So as one of her Labour colleagues I'd very much like to know the evidence for your revelation. Is it something Nilgun told you in an unguarded moment? Did you hear it through an open window as you were passing her home? Or perhaps an anonymous document slipped quietly through your letterbox?

Or perhaps I've entirely misunderstood your comment?

And by the way, while you're filling in Shelter's template letter to Claire Kober, Council Leader, asking what action Haringey is taking, perhaps you'd amend this slightly to ask how Government cuts have impacted on the Enforcement, Environmental Health, Legal and other staff who take action against rogue landlords?

And why not also shoot-off an email to Housing Minister Grant Shapps, who says: "Shocking. We’re determined to stamp out rogue landlords”. Perhaps ask what he's doing to tighten-up the Planning regulations and make financial penalties on such landlords just a teensy bit larger than the cash they rake-in by flouting the law.

Alan, I was at an Area Assembly about three years ago and Councillor Canver got into quite a lather admonishing us for how much our houses had gone up in value and that it was OK to turn a blind eye to the planning law if it meant that people got homes. At that point someone in the meeting who did work in planning stood up and told her that was illegal.

I will not be writing to Claire Kober to ask her how the government's budgets cuts have affected enforcement. It's not that I don't think it could get any worse if you just moved everyone who works there into parking, it's just that I'm fully supportive of the careful conversion of the Harringay Ladder into bedsit land. My neighbour and I keep an eye on conversions in our street and so far my Greek neighbours are doing a really nice job so I'm saying nothing (as if there was any point anyway).

I think I might just contact Mr Shapps though. Increasing penalties for rogue landlords is an excellent idea. He's on twitter so I'll see how succinct I can be.
