Okay Iris, I'll bite - why?

DAVID Lammy has made many fine speeches, including one a few years ago at the re-opening of Tottenham's Marcus Garvey Library and another more recently to the UN General Assembly.

His best in my view however, was the excellent speech he made 11 months ago to the UN Security Council, about Russia's execrable invasion of Ukraine.

I was proud of him as UK Foreign Secretary (also proud of his once kindly describing me as a local trouble maker!)

Praise on him.

I thought hard and came to the conclusion that on balance I agreed with public requests to marchers to postpone anti-genocide marches this weekend. These pleas came from a wide range of organisations and individuals; including Keir Starmer and David Lammy. Starmer rightly asked for people to respect the grief of British Jews. In particular this would apply to family, friends and neighours involved.

Which seemed in contrast to people gathering nearby who heckled David Lammy. Whether or not this is the right time to recognise Palestine, shouting at Lammy outside the synagogue was no way to show empathy.

What Lammy said as Deputy Prime Minister seemed pretty much what he could say. Especially as at the time the Police were still gathering evidence about the detail of what had happened.

The guy is a total weathervane politician.

The man is a fool and is indicative of the complete shambles of this Labour govt.

As a young man I was once very lucky to work as a social worker in a genuine team. One of many examples of what I mean by 'genuine' in this context. One Friday evening after the office shut, a bunch of us realised that one colleague was feeling very worried about a particular client. So we sat and talked with her; listening and trying to make helpful, suggestions. She faced a serious, knotty problem. We tried to offer warmth and support.

October 2025. Members of a synagogue walk to prayer. On the most solemn and holy day of the religious year, they suddenly confront murder and injury. Across the world, murders in hundreds and thousands the daily news. In the midst of raw grief, fear and anger, humans seek and offer actions and words of comfort for one another.

What point adding petty political insults on a website?

FEW politicians in the UK have spoken out so powerfully and effectively on Ukraine as David Lammy. He has my respect.

This is the man that went on national TV and replied that the successor to Henry VIII was Henry the VII.

The man's an idiot.

A mistake in a game on TV of no consequence.

Let he who has never made a mistake, cast the first accusation of idiocy.

There is a wealth of material Clive. Remember when he implied the Vatican was racist?

Remember, as much as we all want Starmer out, this man would be PM is the short remaining window before Labour is removed and Britain can get back on track.

IRIS,

as much as we all want Starmer out
I can think of two former Haringey New Labour Councillors, now MPs, who are likely to want him to stay in. The more ambitious of the pair made a point of sitting on a Parliament bench as close behind the PM as possible (TV, profile, Speaker). There will be more über-New Labour who will rally round the PM.

the short remaining window before Labour is removed
There are four years before the next general election! It's not likely, but possible that New Labour could right the ship. New Labour need to be better than Continuity Conservatives. A PM needs to be about more than "Delivery" and no flag surrender. Mr Starmer's political future may depend on next May's London local elections. Haringey's performance may not help.

Britain can get back on track.
The Conservatives? Back on track? You must be joking!

The government will fall apart within four years.

And, no, the Conservatives, at least under the current transitionary leadership, are not the answer.

As you say, all will be revealed in May.
