Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey will come together this Saturday 4th August 2012 at The “Seven Sisters Olympic Garden Party” in Manchester Gardens, N15.  Organised by HAGA, Haringey’s local alcohol service, the event will bring together people affected by their own or someone else’s alcohol use with the local community in celebration of the Olympian and Paralympian qualities inherent in us all.

As part of the event, the community will share a free picnic, create “Olympic” bunting, participate in a mini-“Olympics” run by two coaches provided by The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, and enjoy two amazing live bands: singer-songwriter, Sara Lilly and three piece rock band, Second Head.  The bunting, created largely from recycled materials, will be displayed in the park throughout the remainder of the Olympics and for the duration of the Paralympics to represent our shared community spirit and celebrate this important moment in Haringey’s history.  We are also pleased to be welcoming the Vartry Road Residents’ Association and Neighbourhood Watch after their free bike maintenance event earlier that day (10am to 12pm) at Woodberry Downs Church.

HAGA's Dr Laura Pechey commented "People affected by alcohol misuse are a typically marginalised group with multiple needs.  We hope to take this opportunity to celebrate our service-users’ achievements in treatment and recovery with each other, friends and families, and the community.  Since recovery means giving up alcohol-related social activities, and sporting events are traditionally celebrated with excessive drinking in this country, it is vital that we offer inclusive alcohol-free alternatives."

The event runs from 1pm to 5.30pm with a range of activities throughout the day and is open to all.  The party is strictly alcohol or drug free.  For more information, see the News page of HAGA's website.
