My wife was walking down Effingham Road yesterday and a scooter mounted the pavement towards the top and snatched her mobile phone and tried to grab her handbag. Then rode off riding down the pavement the wrong way towards green lanes.
Obviously impossibly to identify the culprit with a Motorcycle helmet on. Medium build white guy on a red scooter.
Police say this is pretty common at the moment unfortunately. Suggest everyone remains extra vigilant, especially when using your mobile phone in public.

Easy money these days as many people walk around with phone on and even ear plugs
Remember a TV report that Police raided a property and found a large amount of phones that had been obtained the same way. Report stated that most are exported
I have seen in past the Police Motor Bike squad on the Powerful Trial bikes. As the Police Bike Squad operate as a pack.
Understand these days their are Apps. To jam a stolen phone and even track them
Big issue as many have unlimited calls. Except for internationals . Let alone cost of replacement phone
Yes. She got pick pocketed in Finsbury Park for her phone on November too! Fortunately she only ever has relatively cheap phones (Moto g series) so not a huge loss.
Not forgetting that lost phones often contain credit Card payment facilities and your phone listings
And some people put others emails and addresses on their phone
Most people do have security on their phones though (fingerprint recognition in most modern devices, or pattern/pin number on older), so accessing any data on the phone is largely impossible.
Thieves generally turn them off immediately so they can't be tracked. I've assisted the Met with tracking down a stolen laptop using the software Prey, which they then recovered - it wasn't until the laptop was resold that it was turned on, weeks later, and could call home.
Phones are supposed to be able to be locked using the phones unique IMEI number rendering the phone useless, but if they’re sent to another continent where they use different bands they can be re programmed. Apparently a lot of the phones that get stolen on the streets here get sent to Nigeria where they can be re programmed without being traced. A serious floor in the the security architecture. LAME!!!
Still doesn’t change the fact the police let these thrives operate largely with impunity. I’d have these lot rounded up in a week or so. Stooge Sting operations with police on motorbikes would be so easy to catch these punks. Shows how far behind the curve the police are. The same goes for actual bike thieves, same thing applies, set up a bait bike and catch them in the act.
Should’nt have to live with stuff like that a normality. So sad.
Sure I caught a TV report that most security devices can be bypassed, on mobile phones
Just like many app's can leak your information to others off mobiles
Same as users that leave bluetooth open in public areas . Not forgetting it has around 100 metres of coverage
Remember years ago in a Service station, We saw people lifting information off others phones
Thankfully there was a Passing please team on break and they arrested them. But mentioned it is a common occurrence. Same as using shared WiFi
