Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

St Ann's Police Station: a kind of exterior charm?

I had an unconfirmed report yesterday that with the current squeeze on police funding across the capital, St Ann's Police Station may be sold, the buildings demolished and the land used within the St Ann's Hospital redevelopment.

That's a pity if it's true. Many of these old police stations have a kind of Dixon of Dock Green  exterior charm that adds to the neighbourhood feel. (Though I dare say that there would be those who would be happy to see them go!).

I wonder if any of these buildings are listable?

Resist, resist, resist, I thought St Ann's was a conservation area, the corner can be
retained the court building behind is recent so that's less of an issue, I did a line up for £10
when I was a student, and put a deposit on a bike for £40 nineteen years ago.

The Laurels building opposite ain't brilliant, so I hope they are planning something better
considered, and think about how the exterior will age, and how services will work,
the Victorian architecture on St Ann's is cracking. We can't fit all the police in an annex.

I still think a secondary school would be great, together with a hospital building fit for purpose,
offering CT scan and x ray facility, sputum testing and the like. With populations growing we could
offer two great schools locally, this would be a High school much like Heartlands, St Ann's would
gain a library open for adult learning, why should Muswell Hill have plenty of options for schools.

Sell it or not, it would be criminal to demolish it - it's a lovely building.

When the Met decided in about 1961 that it needed high speed patrol cars they chose the Daimler Dart - a sports convertible. The first in our territory were assigned to St Anne's nick (it had the divisional garage) and driven there from the Midlands by patrol officers. I and other local press went to see tham arrive and photograph them The copper turned up on a wet monday and got out soaked with the footwells of the cars totally awash. the hoods had leaked like seives. "Went like the clappers," said one copper before adding "But you won't catch me in one again!" Red faces all round and the cars were taken back to Daimler on trailers!

Don't suppose you have any of the pics?

Sadly no, the Hornsey Journal files will include - what happened to those? I spent four years keeping them up to date 59-63!

Such a shame if it is not reinstated as a police station. I am sure it could be listed somewhere as a building of significant interest??? Not sure where - English Heritage maybe.

Its a lovely building and belongs to the community, if this Gov wanted to improve community it would use it as a community liason building with support for community groups and access to resources such as internet access, a cafe for the proposed cycle highway in Harringay, could be beautiful what with the land in St Anns Hospital ground would make an idea wildlife area attached to the community building, if this doesn't happen what vision do you see? its time to start visioning the community you would like to live in not the visions of elitistist self servative Condem Gov.

Read back on that and I'm right, thanks for the no thumbs up dudes :)

Why do you expect the Government to do it ? Why not the community ?
