Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Meet Tom Gugi who's just opened the Safari cafe/bakery on Hornsey High Street. It feels like a good honest sort of place with some fine looking cakes and some fresh looking savoury snacks. There isn't much seating though, so if you'we wanting to stay and eat rather than take away, be prepared to take your chances or to take your snack al fresco into Hornsey Church Tower garden or perhaps down the road the Priory Park.

Originally from Kenya, Tom spent most of his childhood in Wood Green. He trained as a chef at the Windows on the World at the top of the Park Lane Hilton and had a spell at at Leith's in Notting Hill and some other posh nosh joints before striking out on his own and following his passion for making cakes and baking.

The cakes are already in stock. His bread shelves have just been fitted and he's planning to start baking soon. Do pop in and say Hi.

Went there today. Really lovely little baker and much more reasonable than the Crouch End equivalents. We sat outside Italica a couple of doors up, had a top Italian coffee and matched it with some jam 'n' cream scones and home-made banoffi pie from Safari. Perfect combination. Can't wait til they start baking too.

Say Hi to Tom from me.

An email in my inbox this morning:

Hello Hugh,

Safari cafe has moved. I thought I'd let you know as it was nice to meet you and I love what you do. I have decided to go near most of my delivery area (south east) as it only makes sense.  Also the need for space was an issue.  Nevertheless, I feel sad because I had already settled and all that work but really,  after a lot of consideration, staying was going to be worse than leaving in the long run. I will keep you posted and hope you come visit us when we are up and running again. Many many thanks for posting us on line,  had loads of good reaction. I will keep in touch. Nice photo on the rainbow.

Kind Regards

Tom

That's a shame.
