This week’s riots have been shocking but not surprising. Along with all the shops along Barking Road we shut our main office early yesterday. Our youth workers met young people arriving at our youth clubs in the afternoon and told them to go home, rather than have them all leave at closing time and walk into trouble in the dark. Newham has not suffered as badly as neighbouring Hackney, and the local council and police have been very strong in response, but there was, and still is, a simmering tension.
