Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Review of the clustering of betting shops in Haringey - an invitation

I've just been forwarded the attached invitation (see below this post) to contribute to a review of the clustering of betting shops in Haringey by the Council's Overview & Scrutiny Committee.

Good news.

(It could be that a copy of this is winging its way direct to HoL and other Harringay groups, but as things stand, it was odd that addressees included names in the east of the borough and the west, but none that I can recognise in Harringay. Of course, well why would there be.)

The accompanying email from Cllr Diakides Isidoros said:

The council's Overview and Scrutiny committee is undertaking an investigation on the impact of clustering of betting shops in specific areas. I hope that the review will provide additional ammunition for our efforts to strengthen the powers of our council on such issues in the future. As part of the review there will be a meeting on the 10th November to hear evidence on the impact of betting shops in Haringey. Please see the attached flier and contact the named official if willing to attend to give evidence.

Given the absence of Harringay names, I was left wondering if Harringay is to be one of the areas they're looking at. I called to check and have had it confirmed that Harringay is in the mix.)

So, if you'd like to have your say, 6pm, 10th November, Civic Centre Wood Green.

A confirmation mail from the chair of the scrutinty committee, circulated by Cllr Canver:

Comrade,
The aim of this scrutiny review is to assess the impact of the clustering of betting shops in local communities, and if any negative effects are identified, to work out how these can be addressed by the council/partners. It is also hoped that the review will help to build a body of evidence to support the council’s aspiration to lobby for change in this area.

The review will hear from:
· local licensing and planning officers– to hear about the framework for licensing gambling premises
· the Gambling Commission – who regulate all gambling in the UK
· betting shop operators (William Hill, Ladbrokes & Assoc. of British Betting Shops) for their perspective on this issue
· Metropolitan Police, GamCare, Gamblers Anonymous – for the impact that betting shops may have in relation to problem gambling, crime and disorder or other issues
· local residents, community groups, resident associations and local businesses to understand what effect this is having within the community.

An extended panel meeting will be used to gather evidence for this review which will be held on Wednesday 10th November at Haringey Civic Centre in Wood Green. The session will be divided in to two parts:
- 3pm to hear evidence from licensing & planning officers, Gambling Commission and betting shop operators
- 6pm to hear evidence from local residents, community groups and residents associations

A detailed programme for the day’s events is still being developed but will be available shortly. Please let me know if you require any further information

Chair: Overview and Scrutiny Committee
London Borough of Haringey

Thought I'd share this pic - direct action on reducing clustering!

Why is there a picture of a bus reversing out of a william hill shop ?
Why's he reversing? He couldn't go forwards, James.
I like the juxtaposition of the "open as usual" sign on the shop!
No Will. You're not up with the game. This is just an interim measure whilst the buses are refitted. The same phased approach as in being used with our aircraft carriers will be used here.

As bendy buses are withdrawn from service they will be refitted as mobile betting shops. To ensure maximum customer choice passengers will be able to choose to travel EITHER on a bendybet bus OR use the standard TfL fleet.

Initially the buses will use rotary blade only betting machines before being converted to full capability fixed wing FOBTs.

Keep up William, keep up.
A reminder of this meeting tomorrow.

Full agenda now published.
