Regulations about locks in rented flats
I have not been able to find definitive regulations about the type of locks required for rented flats in converted houses. For example, does the door to the outside need to be openable without a key? In other words, there is no traditional Chubb lock. Does the door from each self contained flat within the conversion need to be openable without a key? They do require fire doors but locks are not mentioned. Is this at the tenant's discretion? These flats were converted a long time ago, so building regulations were less stringent. Can anybody shed light on this for me please? Thank you.

I agree must ask the freeholder perm - with me he did immediately and his ground floor flat also agreed - unlike your selfish lady. ask her how she would feel if she responsible for people horrible death on her conscious. show her- educate her with locksmith info maybe

I had to get our landlord to add locks, on the basis of insurance requirements. The lease required us to have contents insurance, but contents insurance wouldn't cover without a minimum amount/type of looks (which we didn't have when we moved in). Same for the windows (which are ancient old things from before everyone wanted locks). Legal requirements or not, it'd definitely be a kindness to make sure you're up to to the minimum for insurance as otherwise tenants could find their policy invalided should they ever have to claim.
