Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Anyone know what's going on with recycling collections of late...

Are they weekly or fortnightly... I'm on Falkland Rd and last week mine was taken on at around 6:30pm on a Tuesday and this week there seems to have been none at all!

On-time collections here though food pick-ups are an hour later it seems. Unfortunately the bin men broke my recycling bin lid (completely off its hinges!) then just left it in my garden. I have to put a brick on it so the wind doesn't whisk it off.

Getting bins fixed is something that does seem to work ok with council report a problem page. Choose 'refuse problem', select "Refuse Collection", enter something like "broken black/green wheelie bin lid" in the description and give the address, and then you can leave the rest of the fields and pages empty, perhaps put a email if you want a reply.

...one left which should be fixed by next week then my street wont have any missing lids.

Many thanks ant, this is very useful.
In our area they have been running behind and they collected again yesterday and then this morning for recycling. Seems that many households are not recycling, and they are filling the new bins till they overflow with mixed rubbish. So thr council are having to come and collect (because its unsigtly and attracts vermin) Council really need to communicate with these people a bit more so that understand the changes and they have no choice than recycle more of their waste. One of my neighbours had her recycling boxes emptied out onto the floor and the recycling rubbish left while the bin men took away the recycling boxes. Bit harsh as they hadn't given her a bin or clear bags to recycle into!

Just to add my twopenneth the tales of woe that have come out of the changeover...I've been waiting for an outdoor food scraps bin since my original email request on the 15th of October.

Four emails later, four sets of assurances it would be delivered and I was finally told that it would be delivered by the end of today (9th Nov).

Hmmm....it's 4.50pm now and no bin.

In my last email I asked them why I had to chase their unclosed jobs (they'd been quoting me the same job number for 3 1/2 weeks), and told them I was quite happy to invoice them for my time as I was performing part of their job management role.

I think I'll start getting that invoice together....

Well, the caddy arrived on Saturday morning.

Still hardly a stellar performance.

So had an interesting chat with the recycling people today...

They didn't take my green bin ( 1/3 full - all pukka stuff)

Chased the lady up the road to ask and she said that whether bin's get taken or not depends on how full they are - and each worker has a different criteria on how full a bin should be before it warrants being taken.

Makes sense I guess but some guidelines on policy would be useful - Alan what do you think is the best way of us getting these?

My initial view, Adam, is that recycling bins with stuff in them should be emptied. There should not be an "informal" percentage measurement which lets Veolia staff decide there's not enough to be taken.

Before posting this reply, I checked with Haringey's waste team who confirm this is the case.

The general advice, if this happens, is for residents to email Veolia or phone their Call Centre. In this particular case the Haringey manager would like to talk to you and take this up as a "case study" in their ongoing service monitoring contacts with Veolia.

N.B. Plainly, neither the manager (nor I) can look into every case. (Or every bin!)

If you would agree to speak to the manager, please email me with your contact details - email/phone number. My email is:  alan.stanton@virgin.net

If a household consistently has only one third of their recycling bin full, they can request a smaller size bin. Though a word of caution: we did this and Veolia didn't stick to the promised timetable for swapping bins.

Hi Alan,

Excellent - very happy to talk to whomever. Will drop you a line now.

In terms of bin capacity - just depends - sometimes a 1/3 ,  sometimes nearly full.

Thanks

They didn't empty our green bin yesterday either, don't know why, it was full so wasn't for the reason they gave you. I peeked in a couple of neighbours bins and they had been emptied. They did move our bin from the front garden though and left it sitting on the footpath. Perhaps they just forgot about it.

Ant, before posting my reply to Adam I checked with Haringey's Waste Management team (which monitors the contract with Veolia). They said that both a partly-full or full recycling bin uncollected are "missed collections" and they would like people to report it to Veolia so it is recorded as such.

Residents can phone Veolia on: 020 8885 7700 (Their website says they will respond on the same day)

Or they have a missed collection page on their website.  (May not be processed till the next day.)

I did report it and got an email back saying they'd send someone to collect it within the next working day. That was last Thursday. Its still not been collected. Hopefully it will be today as thats the next regular weekly collection, its quite overflowing now with a couple of bags on the side.

How did you get on with your report being a "case study" Adam?
