Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all

Thought some may be interested in an area guide I did for ratings site Qype, Highlighting all that's good to see and do in and around Tottenham. I also wrote a commentary on the guide for their blog

It's an open-source guide, so I'd welcome any additions to it (although you'll need to join Qype if you haven't already) if you know of anywhere brilliant I've missed: the guide includes a few venues in Wood Green, Harringay and some other places that I would regularly visit as a resident, so it's not too narrowly defined!

cheers, Abi.

I can't disagree with you there Hugh. It's a shame Harringay doesn't have a different sounding name to Haringey, maybe there could be a new name given to it altogether! I am not up for setting up a website for my neighbourhood no, I wouldn't have a clue how to do it! For any of my implied criticism, I think this website does a great job, I'm just a bit jealous its not focused on my local area! You must have had this discussion endless times, sorry.

The Council have been half-trying to rename Harringay to Green Lanes, as you can see from one of the discussions I linked to. You can also see that 100 years ago the council tried to change the spelling to Haringey. In neither case were locals consulted. In both cases the locals didn't want the change. God alone knows why in 1965 they chose a different spelling for the new borough, but, spellings aside Camden, Islington, Hackney and many other boroughs all manage the neighbourhood/borough name sharing without a problem. I don't see why it can't be the same here.

My 2p on this: I do understand wanting to define an area on the neighbourhood level, totally. However on reflection I don't think there was anything wrong with me including a few venues that happen to be in another one (because a 'neighbourhood' is smaller than a town/borough etc). There is overlap.

And it's not just because there's naff-all to do in Tottenham before anyone starts scoffing about that - a Qype guide needs only 5 places to be a 'valid' guide and I had seven that were indisputably in Tottenham proper - I just don't think that neighbourhoods have to be a completely static concept. Also plenty of my friends who live in the areas I am being ticked off for including say they live in Tottenham so what's that all about?

Abi, I don't disagree with your chosen area; just trying to get the naming right.
