We've been quoted £800-1000 to repaint the front of our terrace (bog-standard 1900's job on the ladder). There are a few cracks to fill and the windowledge needs smoothing but this seems a great deal too much money to me.
1. Have you had similar work done and what was the cost?
2. Can you recommend a painter?
Thanks!

Sophie. Do the windows/front door/woodwork need painting or just the brickwork ? there may be a lot of work, if so, £800 sounds reasonable. If it's a simple case of applying paint to the brickwork without any prep work (a quick spruce up) then £300 max. Preparing window frames to be painted is one of the hardest jobs. Also it may need to be scaffolded. Hope this helps.
It depends on a few things.
My dad is a painter (also called John!) who lives in Hornsey and has his own company.
You can reach him on 07800995307 if you wanted him to quote you, he's done a few other house fronts in the area.
Hope thats helpful
...very nice chap called Martin mob: 01726338652 might also be able to help...can't remember his last name.
I think with house painting you very much get what you pay for. It's all in the preparation, which takes time and if done properly ensures that the job will last. I paid about that amount last time I had it done and don't expect to have to do it again for a few more years. It also depends on the sun - the back of my house gets more sun and needs redecorating more often.
better to spend 1000 on a good job than half that on a bad one!
Thanks everyone for helpful advice! will have a think and get back to tradespeople once I've counted the pennies
We use a local guy called Michael, who lives on Wightman Road. His number is 07905 248747. He has done quite a lot of work for us both inside and out and is very reasonable and I can highly recommend him.
Not sure if you solved this, but we recently had our terrace house painted (front and back) and it was £350 and a good job. There weren't too many cracks to fill on ours so not sure how much of a difference that would make. PM me if you want details sent over.
