Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all - anyone know what all of the drums and noise on Green Lanes was about last night at around 11pm?! All sounded very exciting but haven't been able to discover the cause!

Cheers

That sounds possible. Elsewhere Kurds have been demonstrating on Newroz to support their cause. So perhaps a mix of the two - cultural and political.

I recorded a visit I made to the Newroz Festival in Finsbury Park some years back

It's usually either the related to the Kurdish struggle in the Middle East or a Turkish football team victory.

AAhh,

forgot about the footy.

It was a demonstration against Erdogan's capture of Afrin

Lots of chants of "Afrin is Kurdish land"

and "Turkish state is ISIS, ISIS is Turkish state"

Interestingly the demonstation albeit small (100 or so) was mostly young people 16-25. In addition it was lead by a young and very vocal woman and the marchers were at least 50% female.

Very cool to see young people engaging in politics with such passion - even though 11pm did seem a bit of strange time to march up Green Lanes.

Sounds like it was political + cultural then - as I said elsewhere there are reports of demonstrations linking Newroz to the Kurdish cause.

The march would be held up by traffic if were much earlier.

Very cool, but I do wonder what it has to do with the UK, or is the demo aimed at the Turkish community?.

I imagine the link to the UK is that the paticipants live here in a country where they can freely protest,

Demonstrations are illeagal in Turkey.

In the past the Kurdish population has demonstrated by turning up on mass to hand themselves in for commiting a minor crime.

Presumably to protest against the illegal invasion of Syria and the seizure of the mainly Kurdish town of Afrin. The Kurdish national struggle prides itself on the significant involvement of women at all levels.

It looks like the collective wisdom of HoL got it right (apart from the footie) when it linked the new year, plight of Kurdish people, Afrin and youth. Please see attached poster.

I live 'on top' of the Community centre and bumped into the vibrant march on my way home - I wish they'd keep local people more informed so we could give any appropriate support. I attended Mehment Askoy's (PYK) funeral and march in November - it was a wonderfully moving event.
