Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I read with some dismay the recent news stories regarding the shortfall of primary school places in London, and the numbers of pupils who do not get their first preference for places.  My son will start school in September 2012, and I would love to hear first hand from parents who have applied this year.  Questions that I have running around my head include:

Has anyone not got a place at all?

How many parents got their first choice of schools?

What criteria did parents use to make their selection eg, location/Ofsted reports etc.

Of the three primary schools within a mile of me, North Harringay seems to rate highest on their Ofsted report, but is the furthest away.  South Harringay is closest, but scores much lower.  I don't think Ofsted reports alone can tell the whole story - so what would parents recommend?

Good luck with your appeal and/or waiting list.

I could be wrong but I'm sure someone told me that your child doesn't have to do reception, they have to go into Year 1. Does anyone know if this is correct?

In my experience the reception year, especially the first term or so, is all about getting the children used to the school routine and regime, socialising with other children and improving their concentrating, sitting still and listening skills. Most of the teaching is looking at letters and their sounds and numbers, so it's pretty basic.

thanks for your advice....

Don't take OAE too seriously. I got upset a couple of times with him but then I realised it's just his style... and now I laugh (most of the time!)

I always thought OAE was a she. Who's mistaken here?

There was a man called Eddie Finnegan

He made jokes in Latin and Greekagin

 When polloi  refused to grinagin

Eddie gave up and turned to the ginagin.

John D, Abi has rumbled my cover. After EF's botched gender reassignment op we reckon there's nothing to grinagin about.
