Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I spotted the panels below on a fence along Hornsey Park Road.

In 1864 the gasworks was quite small and the River Moselle (I've coloured blue) was still mostly above the ground.

In 1869 Aeronaut Henry T Coxwell took off from here on a foggy November afternoon...

Thirty years later Gasholders 1 & 2 were on site. The surrounding countryside had been built on but much of the River Moselle was still above ground.

The two Gasholders held over a million cubic feet of gas... they decided to add another...

Sadly (c1909) the poor old River Moselle got culverted

By 1915 the poor old Moselle has disappeared....

And in the 1920s Gasholder 3 was built

And this was how it remained more or less until this past year.

The area in blue is all now being re-developed. And we think it's time to de-culvert the Moselle.
